Often situations arise for the Inquisition that could be easily sorted out by sending in a squad of Space Marines. But their numbers are few and so it is left to the Imperial Guard to sort out. So it came about that those Guardsmen who proved themselves in battle and were able to work alone or in small groups were aquired by the Inquisition. These Inquisition Suppression Teams [IST] were setup as a more available (and expendable) alternative to Space Marines. The lives of IST are often short as one or more of the team is killed in the course of the mission and those who survive are either sent back to the battlefield or to be briefed on their next mission. The stakes are high as those who fail or learn more than is healthy, are sent back to the battlefield to die and those who suceed are either paid off or briefed for their mission depending on the Inquisitor incharge.
