Virgin Trains Class 220 DEMU

DORSET VOYAGER.

Naming ceremony at Swanage.

The first train to travel from the mainline onto Swanage Railway since 3rd Jan 1972 when the Swanage branch was closed.
She ran as diagrammed working 5Z18: on 07 Sept 2002, scheduled times were 15:20 EH T&RSMD, 15:30/6 Eastleigh, 15:44 Southampton, 16:04 Brockenhurst, 16:35 Bournemouth, 16:46 Poole, 16:53/4 Wareham, 16:57 Worgret Junction, 17:18 Furzebrook Gas Siding, 18:18 Motala Fm. I watched her quietly drift through Hamworthy station at 16:57 in the evening sun.

The four million pound Virgin Voyager set no:220018 rolled onto the Swanage Railway along the reinstated connection from Furzebrook gas terminal siding onto the Swanage Railway track at 5 MPH with no passengers on board and was stored overnight at the siding near Motala house with Swanage Railway staff keeping a watchful eye on her.
She was signalled down the Furzebrook line to the Swanage Railway from Wareham signalbox by Bob Richards.
On 3rd January 1972 Mr Richards was also on duty at Wareham box and had signalled the last British Railways train to leave the Swanage branch before its closure and subsequent track lifting.
