Paris Barclay (1956 - )

African-American scriptwriter, playwright, and director of stage, television, motion pictures, and music videos, born in Harvey, Illinois. Mr. Barclay first began directing music videos in the 1980s, working with such varied performers as the New Kids on the Block, Janet Jackson, LL Cool J, Barry White, Bob Dylan, and Harry Connick, Jr. In the 1990s he moved on to directing series television, working on E.R., City of Angels, and NYPD Blue. In 1997, he both directed and appeared in the episode "The Breeder" of the sci-fi series Sliders, one of the last appearances of Spencer Garbett. In 1998 Paris Barclay was awarded an Emmy award and the Directors Guild of America award for his work on NYPD Blue. In 1996 he made his feature film directorial debut with the spoof Don't Be A Menace to Society While Drinkin' Your Juice in the Hood, but found the experience of working with the homophobic Wayans Brothers to be very uncomfortable. That same year, Barclay directed America's Dream and The Cherokee Kid. Mr. Barclay has also written  and directed many off-Broadway plays and television commercials, and conducted interviews with celebrities of stage, television, and film for The Advocate. He works diligently for the AIDS charity Project Angel Food, and in 2000 was awarded their Founder's Award. He currently lives in Los Angeles.
