Mercedes de Acosta (1893 - 1968)

French author, poet, screenwriter, designer, and social commentator  who claimed numerous lesbian lovers, including Marlene Dietrich, and Greta Garbo. An impressive array of great talents and thinkers were counted among her friends, lovers, and acquaintances, including Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Malvina Hoffman, Isadora Duncan, Alla Nazimova,  Ivor Stravinsky, and Andy Warhol. Her memoir, Here Lies the Heart (1960), was resented by many of her circle for its frankness, and led to her being ostracized by nearly all those she considered her closest friends. She died alone and impoverished in New York. A controversy recently ensued when letters written by Garbo were discovered which some hoped (and others feared) would detail and prove the lesbian relationship which Mercedes claimed with the screen actress.
