Giulio Alberoni (1664 - 1752)

Italian statesman who in 1716 became de facto premier of Spain after securing an alliance between that country and his native Parma. His reforms did much to revive and rebuild the country which had suffered during the War of the Spanish Succession. He was banished from Spain following a disastrous defeat of Spanish forces by a Britsh, French, and Austrian alliance in 1719.  He fled to Italy, where he helped to elect Pope Innocent XIII in 1721 and (surprise!) was subsequently acquited of charges brought against him by Spain. He later became a legate, serving in both Ravenna and Bologna.
