The Advocate
Largest news and lifestyle publication of the GLBT community at present. Founded in the late 1960s as a mimeographed newsletter, by the 1970s The Advocate evolved into a tabloid newspaper under David Goodstein, then a magazine in the late 1980s. By the 1990s, two other publications, Advocate Men and Unzipped, had been spun off from the original. While some, most notably Arthur Evans, have criticized the Advocate for promoting a middle-class version of the gay lifestyle, it remains the most read and respected of mainstream gay publications.
