This Japanese Judo champion defeated Helio Gracie in a judo/jiu-jitsu-styled match. This is an article about their famous match and Kimura's biography published in the United States Judo Federation's (USJF) News Magazine, Vol. 3, No.2, February 1995. (Note: The article was probably partly based on Kimura's autobiography where he stated that he broke Helio's arm. In a Japanese martial arts magazine interview, Helio denies this. It may have been Kimura's belief that he broke Helio's arm. However, Kimura had great admiration for Helio and wanted Helio to teach at the Kodokan in Japan since Kimura saw pre-war judo techniques which he felt had disappeared in Japan.

VIDEO TAPES

Available Instructional Video series on Brazilian Jiu- Jitsu

The Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy (Rorion & Royce Gracie)has a Basic and Intermediate BJJ instructional tape series. Best for absolute beginners. Rorion is very detailed, patient, and more than comfortable explaining the techniques in front of the cameras.

Renzo Gracie / Craig Kukuk have their own BJJ instructional tape series. Their tapes correct many glossed over points and topics in Rorion & Royce's tapes especially in terms of vale tudo or streetfighting application of BJJ. Much more emphasis is placed on fighting an opponent in a vale tudo environment. For example, the "side-mount" or "cross-side" is covered as the topic of one tape. The tapes show a multitude of techniques.

Pedro Carvalho, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt produced his own multi-volumed "advanced" instructional video tapes on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. There's vale tudo footage of Pedro himself taking on strikers as well as one fight between a rather young-looking BJJ student fighting a striker. The striker easily gets brought down to the ground by the BJJ student and succumbs to a choke from behind. He has a second set out which emphasizes on vale tudo techniques and more advanced techniques.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu In-Action Video Tapes 1 & 2
The two video tapes from the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy contain NHB matches (in the ring as well as private challenge matches at the Gracie Academy and a fight between Rickson Gracie and a Luta Livre fighter named Hugo Duarte on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro) with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighters including Gracie family members. One tape features footage of Helio Gracie fighting Kato and Kimura.

History of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu
This Japanese video should be made available in the US by the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy according to their newsletter. It has excellent photos of Helio and Carlos Gracie as well as old black & white film footage of them practicing techniques.

Vale Tudo Japan
This is an annual vale tudo event in Japan. The only concession is the use of light gloves when fighting. Rickson Gracie has fought in the first and secondtournament and not surprisingly won both. His web site has a merchandise page for info on purchasing video tapes of the events.

LUMAX CUP Tournament of J
This is a vale tudo-styled annual event in Japan. Competitors wear light gloves and must wear a Judo or Sambo gi (jacket). In 1995, Egan Inoue, an American blue belt in BJJ, fought his way into the finals and lost to a Japanese fighter with high rank in Judo in a match filled with awesome display of technique and counters.Egan returned in 1996 and fought his way into the finals and lost again to another fighter. Videos for this event are only available in Japan but is traded or sold by individuals on rec.martial.arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Discussion Forum.

Note: This is by no means a complete list.
