Fyn - Denmark
Fyn and the Central Islands
Named the Garden of Denmark by its most famous son, Hans Christian Andersen, Fyn (Funen) is the smaller of the country's two major islands. Lined with plumb-straight vegetable fields and flower gardens, the flat-as-a-board land is relieved by beech glades and swan ponds. Manor houses and castles that seem to pop up from the countryside like magnificent mirages include some of northern Europe's best preserved: the 12th-century Nyborg Slot, the Egeskov Slot, and the lavish Valdemars Slot. The fairytale clich~ often attached to Denmark really does spring from this provincial isle, where the only faint pulse emanates from Odense, its capital. Trimmed with thatched houses and green parks, the city makes the most of the Andersen legacy but surprises with a rich arts community at the Brandts K1wdefabrik, a former textile factory turned museum compound.
It's quick and easy to reach the smaller islands of Langeland and Tisinge-both are connected to Fyn by bridges. Slightly more isolated is AEro, where the town of AEroskobing, with its painted halftimbered houses and winding streets, seems caught in a delightful time warp.
