Fjaerelandfjord

The gracious Fjaerelandfjord cuts through Fjaereland. The fjord was formed by glaciers during many glaciations in the last 2-3 million years.

Fjaereland (between Sognefjord and Jostedalsbreen) has 300 inhabitants. It has been settled since the Viking Age and is an agricultural area. Due to the easy access to the glaciers, tourism has been important to Fjaereland for the last 150 years. In addition to the glaciers Boyabreen and Supphellebreen, Fjaereland is famous for the Norwegian Glacier Museum and the Norwegian Book Town. Mundal, the centre of Fjaerland is protected as a national heritage. Hotel Mundal was built in 1891 and is one of the few large, wooden hotels left in Norway. The church dates back to 1861
