now you can service the parts and clean
it completly, note on my bolt the sides have been stoned flat exactly on
a 600 grit stone to remove the casting imperfections and make a smooth
surface for the bolt to ride on,see the curve under the rear of the bolt?
thats also wanting to be smoothed out but with a 600 grit piece of wet
or dry emery paper to smooth it out also.the sides and top of the locking
block want to be done too, this will make the lever action very smooth and
take little effort to work and turn a stiff action into a smooth one.if
your trigger pull is heavy and you have done trigger work, now is the time
to stone it a little at a time untill its about 3.5 lbs.keep in mind that
you can do this just by removing the hammer and tang when its together
for that reassembling it to make sure your getting the right lbs and not
a dangerous hair trigger.the underside of the hammer where the spring makes
contact can be polished out as well making for a smoother faster ignition
and feel.reassembly is the same.first in goes the bolt then the locking
block, then the lever and lifter slipping on over the bottom of the locking
blocks tang in the levers slot, now insert the screw in the lifter hole
to secure that .make sure the bolt is pushed forward all the way and theninsrt
the pin thru the upper forward hole to secure the lever and bolt and put
the screw on.you may have to jockey the lever a little to get the forward
part of the levers holding base in the front to line up with its screw.when
thats all donereinsert the rear tang assembly and then the screw, now push
the hammer in and then the hammers screw then tighten that up .now you
can put the stock back on and you are done.make sure to lightly oil the
inside of the reciever after a thorough cleaning and wash all parts and
clean them well after theyre polished up to remove all the grit that may
have accumulated.do it twice to make sure.your rifle should be slick as
ever now and little effort to use as compared to a stone stock stiff action
out of the box 94 winchester. for
magazine care just take the mag cap off and then run a patch or two down
the tube after taking the spring and the follower out, lightly oil the tube
but dont drown it.also shave a little bit off the mag cap screw so it doesnt
bottom out in the hole ,reason is the pressure exerted on the barrel will
throw groups off and most cant figure out why.also on the barrel bands
,look at them for uneven wear spots and if theyre some theyre take some
600 grit emery paper and then true it carefully flat on a dowel so they
sit flat on the barrel, also relieve some material in the magazine notches
so theyre is a little play but not much thats noticable on both band screw
slots, this is known as free floating a lever action.when the screws are
tightened up on the bands the gun will seem tight but that extra depth
in the notches where the screws sit helps it group tighter when all of
the above is applied as the rifle is shot.use a small thin round file for
this and dont get heavy handed with it.you dont want to go thru the mag
tube and also just relieve the notches for the band screws in the barrel
just a touch as well.
