Let the page load up there are 3 reels shown for examples ,the first is a penn #85
The second a Penn #155 , and A Penn #49, although they are all different in size and Shape the way they go together is the same as well as maintainance.
ok the first step is take the handle and drag star off, then the spar and seat screws, next the 4 screws holding the plate in the haft,it will spring up when you do this so use the thumb to hold it and let it up gently.in the second pic you will see the catch pawl on the left with spring, lift the 2 out ,then the plate with the attached crankshaft, now clean and regrease the drags , i use a heavy duty lithium/barium grease that resists heat and water , use a very light film on the drag washers and assemble the stack in the gear then pack the teeth with the grease , next pack the outer edge on the pinion teeth and put in in its plate and insert that in the reel. next take the crankshaft plate and put it in the plate, now take some grease and one smooth sided screw and insert the screw in the catch pawl hole, now put the pawl in ,note how the plate is turned. put in the pawl spring on the pawl and hold the pinion gear down, now turn the plate to the side  and over the pinion gear and the pawl and spring . now hold the plate down and flip it over and tighten the screw down in the pawl catch hole , then add the other screws note in the picture that the other smooth sided screw goes in the opposite corner thats for the selector plate as a guide . then reassmble the outer half with the shaft bushing ,drag star and handle and screw then assemble the plate to the rest of the reel and spool assembly and you are done .this method is the same for all 3 reels even though the pawl catch and springs are different this is how they go together as shown below also hold the mouse over the picture for more tips .
note that on the model #85 the origanal leather drag washers were cleaned in wd-40 and regreased, worked fine.
use wd 40 solvent to clean out the old grime and grease
here is how to hold the pinion for pawl and spring insertion assembly , just push down on the pinion gear so it and its plate hit bottom so that the crankshaft plate can be turned to the side , also use the smooth sided screw in the hole for the pawl catch to hold it in place, note the tip stikking up thru the pawl catch with spring in place , this type of penn uses a coil spring instead of a leaf as in others this is where the 2 smooth sided screws fit in the plate , one will hold the pawl catch in place and the plate , the other is smooth because its also a guide on the selector plate that is used for free spool or reeling with the catch, use some grease to hold the screw in place in its hole when assembling the catch and spring assembly , it will keep it from falling out as you put the plate in . also the catch and spring go in last before assembly
use the thumb to to push down on the pinion gear
the dots next to the screw bottoms indicate where to use the smooth shanked screws
hold the plate tight down when your finishing the assembly
note the leaf spring on the pawl instead of a coil spring
hold the pinion down to turn the plate once the pawl spring is in here it is finished and cleaned and greased
note that on the above penn#155 sideplate assembly that the only thing different other than size is tha fact that the 155 doesnt have a coil spring on the pawl but a leaf instead, also the washers in the drag are micarta ,not leather as in the old #85 above on top.also the maine shaft spool bearing cup on the 155 doesnt have the extended bushing into the pinion gear like the #85 does too. the rest and the assembly technique is the same tho for all , you have to drop in the crankshaft plate assembly , face the plate to the opposite side then insert the smooth sided screw and the pawl then the spring , make sure the pawl is in its full catch position before inserting the leaf spring ,then push the pinion gear down as shown and swivel the plate sideways over the pawl and pinion then ,hold it to gether and then tighten the screw down thats allready in the pawl catch hole , you must have that screw in to hold the pawl or itll never go together right or hold the leaf spring properly when putting the reel back together again.
