Clean The Wood Up!!!!!
what i normally do is to first take a damp cloth and mild soap and then rub the stock down just to see whats what  first and get off all the grundge i can usually.after that i take a good lookand determine what the finish needs, if its a poly finish ill use a good wood wax spray. if its a tung oil finish i use a good wood oil with lemon oil and just a little on a rag goes a long way, dont drown it by no means.if theyres some scratching etc i will lightly steel wool the stock with a 5 to 6\0 fine steel wool to even things out, take a look and either oil or refinish.if the finish is thin i will take a fine non lint pad and then swipe the whole stock down lightly in tung oil being carefull not to leave any streaks and give an even coat all around with it.i will aplly 2 to 4 coats depending letting each coat dry 24 hours.Formby's makes a good tung oil as all the gun makes stuff i have tried seems so thick from sitting on a shelf forever you will have to thin it out,the formbys low gloss gives a nice amber reddish tint i like to walnut so i stick with it,besides its cheaper to get it by the half pint and i can refinish at least 8 stocks from raw wood out of a half pint for 3 $ which aint to bad at all, plus i dont have to thin it out.if you steel wool it smooth it will give a nice finish for hunting and if you want just polish it up hand rubbing the polish oil in and it will be gloissy as ever for show n tell time.for dents and deep scratches heat up a pencil soldering iron, now take an eyedropper full of water and put a drop in the dent or scratch, now apply the hot soldering iron tip in the dent, the steam and heat will force the dent or scratch to swell up filling itself, you can now repeat or smooth it up with some sandpaper taking it thru the grades to 220 grit ,lightly steel wool it and refinish the stock~!
