| The 1903 battle sights were designed to give the maximum danger space when fired against enemy infantry,This was in common in battle rifles of the time.ballistics got better by smokeless powders for military rifles to shoot effectively over longer ranges without adjusting the sights or the point of aim,by holding center on target of known heights. The original battle sight 'zero for the 1903 with 1906 ammunition was 530 yards, the bullet would strike poa at that range and higher than that at short distances giving a max trajectory above the line of sight of about 30" or so at midrange. This was discovered to be high for shooting at small targets at shorter range, and the front sight was later made taller to give a battlesight zero of 447 yards roughly and lower midrange trajectory of 20" above line-of-sight,but the rifle still shot very high of point of aim at short combat ranges, which was a problem never resolved in the 1903 battle sight zero. The M2 ball ammunition which was standard for U.S.troopys to use during WW2 gives closer trajectories to the 1906 ball, though a bit flatter due to slightly higher muzzle velocity. Assuming the later 447 yard sights, the shot placement at 100 yards should be about 5 to 6 inches above point-of aim with a six o clock hold.what one can do is to insert a front sight blade slightly taller tho to lower the shot hit on paper to correct this. as i dont foresee myself shooting at anything over 200 yards maybe 300 max with iron sights, that would at 445 yards roughly be putting the bullet about 12-15" high at that range with m2 ball.hope it helped clear up why some 03's hit high and some that have had theyre blades shaved should be right on at 100 yards so test them on the range with your loads and write down what does what.i use lake city match ammo mainly and try to create that load whenever possible but most times ill use stuff like factory or other gi stuff too.at least with lake city match ammo you can judge all others by this as its most consistent and at 13$ a box cheap for accuracy.i recently found a stash of m2 ball u.s. from talon mfg. in pawpaw w.v at my local shop which is touted as us unfired milspec recovered component ammo for 8$.its surplus gi ammo reloaded with pulled milspec bullets on lake city 66 marked brass. a definate good deal to get match cases.so look for that stuff if possible too.i try to stick with lake city myself as i know its a proven good case.they should be annealed every 5 reloads but i will shoot 3 times and anneal then just to have a margin of on reload for safety sake then do 5 more and discard the shell ,also do a routine case length check and trim it if needed to spec, case length gauges are cheap, and a case trimmer is too if your into tack driving it all adds up on paper.altho some reload up to 12-14 times.i dont push that at all.the talon ammo is reloaded to m2 spec and not match spec as well. keep that in mind also the sights on the 03 were for the 30-03 round! almost forgot so that also explains the hieght differ between the two ammos used in the sighting of the battle sight zone.with the 30-03 it would have been much lower than the 30-06. .............. |
