to grease an open face reel take the side plate cover screw out , lift plate up and away , clean out all the old grease in the area and wipe clean with cotton cloth, now is a good time to look for sand or dirt stuck to the cloth , if so ,you might want to completely dissasemble the reel further that can be done by pulling pin on the crank rod and pulling that straight out, then unscrew the nut holding the lower half spool cover ,take that and cover off, lift out gear and clean ,regrease ,reassemble the reel, be careful putting the lower spool cover back on as these sometimes go on one way ,then tighten the retainer nut , that also cures loose spool covers too , that nut likes to loosen up after a while sometimes, insert crank rod taking note that also goes in one way with the guide, if it wont spin around turn rod guide around 180 degrees, that will cure it,put in the pin,add spool and your done.

in the middle pic is old hardened grease, the lower pic is a reel that was dissasmebled wd 40 cleaned ,wiped dry and regreased all set to get the plate put back on,i use multi purpose heavy duty lithium wheel / axle bearing grease , hint if you pack under the gear heavy with grease that annoying ratchet pawl click goes by hardly noticed afterwards due to the grease, and still catches the gear notch every time, take care how it comes aprt so you can put it back together right.
