Here we will discuss the polishing and feed ramps and the advantages it has for one to offer and how to do so with pics. |

Shown here is a barrel feed ramp and a mag well feed ramp, both are crucial to the feeding of your 1911 or 1911a1 clone or colt auto pistol.to do the polishing you will need the following items.some 600 grit emery paper, and or a dremel moto tool with a bullet felt pad and some jewelers rouge, also a degreaser for when done and some bluing to put on the ramps afterwards to make it look clean and well done.altho i recommend this highly the magazine feed lips are most causes in jams so check against other mags and only bend the lips a little bit at a time. |

looking at the frame you see the ramp.now take the dremel and rouge or 600 grit wet or dry emery paper and polish it out carefully, when using the dremel tool go lightly as it will rut the face and we dont want that, the idea here is to just get a surface shine going taking out the rough finish and making a nice smooth one for the bullet head to glide up on.if its really bad and rough you can use a 7\16ths hard dowel with the paper wrapped around it to remove the rough surface.note how mine is smooth and blued yet is not a mirror! we just want the thing to have no scratches or heavy tool marks showing here! so take your time and remember go lightly. |

now for the feed ramp, this is a very delicate operation here so use a padded vise to hold the barrel in when doing this.in the pic youll see mine was rounded by someone other than me and did a half assed job on it too,it took me a long time to clean it up smooth and now it feeds emptys from a magazine when i release the slide, one thing to remember is never go more than the inner bevel edge in the chamber when doing this .you basically want to just polish the bevel itself or get radical as shown in the pic.i highly suggest polishing it first before rounding the ramp on the chamber.remember to go lightly with the buffing wheel on the dremel so we dont remove metal, jewelers rouge as fine a compound as it is can do this,so cant getting heavy handed with a dowel wrapped in 600 grit emery too! again take your time.reassemble every now and then and using a dummy round test your work for feeding properly, never use live ammo at all.you can always take it apart and do a bit more untill its right for you and the rounds you use,i like lead swc's for indoor range shooting and hardball for all around work myself.most feeding probs are actually in the feed lips on the magazine so check them out first before doing this operation or if unsure have a local gunsmith with a reputable history of good work do it for you. |
