Mr. Keith Shier
Mayor of Brock
Township Offices
Cannington, ON.
L0E 1E0
I am writing you on behalf of the membership of
our organization. We have a membership in the South Lake Simcoe
watershed which includes your jurisdiction.
We are very concerned about the lack of action of
your council and staff in the matter of the current destruction of
the very significant Wilfrid Bog in your municipality. The Wilfrid
Bog is a unique Canadian place, designated by IUCN as a Man and the
Environment site as early as the 1970's. It harbours habitat for rare
plants, including orchids, and many important bird and
reptile/amphibian species. The current destructive earth moving and
tree removal activities there, of which I know your Council and staff
are aware, are in direct contravention of the Durham Region Tree
Cutting bylaw (preparation to extract peat, requires Amendment to the
Durham Regional Official Plan). Also these clandestine habitat
disturbances by the peat operator are obviously contrary to the EP.
(Environmental Protection) designation that the Town of Brock must
uphold by law and for the practice of good planning principles.
We demand that you and other councillors and
staff act immediately to stop the destruction of this unique and
important place of natural environment legacy to all Ontarians.
Please advise me and our membership of you actions.
Sincerely,
Paul Harpley BSc. M.A.
President, South Lake Simcoe Naturalists
