The Family Herd
Welcome
to Powell Ranch! We live out by Scullin. It's just a little southeast of Hickory & a
few miles north of Mill Creek. Most everybody around here just calls it the "y"
because a couple of paved roads meet there. We're talkin' good ol' Oklahoma Rural!

There are 3 generations of us living on the ranch. My dad is 82 and he still works out there with us every day. He has gotten to where he "supervises" from the nearest shade, tho. Sometimes that is just great, and other times it is downright annoying! I was raised here when it was a dairy, milking about 250 head of Holsteins (that was a lot back in the 50's). We changed to purebred commercial Black Angus in 1974, and have never regretted it. I learned at a young age, being an only child, that it doesn't make any difference whether you're male or female, just get in there & do it! I can unload a truckload of feed, fix fence, plow a field, and work cattle just as well as anyone, and I love it. It's a great life & I think we're very lucky to be able to do it.

Between us, Kenneth & I have 4 children & several grandchildren. The breakdown is: 2 country kids & 2 city kids. But my classification isn't determined by location, it's by "the test". Try it yourself - point at a cow and ask what kind it is. If the answer is a color instead of a breed, it's definitely "city".
I think the song
playing should be "Mama's, please let your babies grow up to be cowboys".
