* The Rodenberg children were the children of Dietrich's sister Katherina (1837-1879)
and her husband Jurgen "Heinrich" Rodenberg (1836-1879). Jurgen died in January
of 1879, and Katherine died in February of 1879. Dietrich Offermann apparently
took some of his sister Katherine's children into his home after the death of their parents.
Roger Kaestner found the Rodenberg estate papers in Monroe County archives
and reports that Dietrich was the executor of their estate. He forgave a $1000 debt
that the Rodenberg's owned him at the time of their death.
On the 1870 Monroe County Census above, the Rodenbergs had six children: Anna, 13,
Henry, 10, Mary, 7, Rebecca, 5, Christina, 3 and a one-month-old unnamed male infant.
Two more children were apparently born after the 1870 census. The children living
with Dietrich Offermann in 1880 include two younger children, John Rodenberg, age 3,
and Catherine Rodenberg, age 9.
Another fact gleaned from this census is that Rebecca and Henry were born in
Hannover, so we know that as late as 1865, Jurgen and Katherine were still living
in Hannover. Dietrich's sister Katherine must have immigrated years after the
other Offermann siblings.
