You can either fly from Invercargill or take the Foveaux Strait Ferry from Bluff harbour. The beauty of the sea crossing is that you do get to see the occasional pelagic bird species.
Since Stewart Island is located in the roaring forties zone, this area is regarded by some to be the pelagic birding capital of the world.

Ulva Island
Is a wildlife sanctuary located in Paterson Inlet, with many threatened and endangered bird species, including: Sth. Is. saddleback, yellowhead, yellow and red crowned parakeets, kaka plus many more forest bird species. Blue penguin and weka is also present.
