The concluding chapter from his best selling 1930s work Man the Unknown.
Carrel draws on his knowledge of science to advocate a new social order based
on natural laws, repudiating the mass standardisation of industrial
civilisation. Carrel argues for the use of science not in the service of
materialism but in the service of a new civilisation that accords with finding
man’s true nature. Like Spengler he explains how civilisation is on the
decline. Unlike Spengler, he believes that this is not an inevitable decline,
and that the use of science gives us the unique opportunity to reverse this
process. He advocates the unique individual above the mass, a hierarchical
society based on true potentialities rather than money, a new aristocracy,
eugenics, a rugged youth born of a Spartan like education, the return to sexual
differentiation, of craftsmanship rather than factory fodder. He calls for the
association of like minded individuals, detaching themselves from contemporary
society repudiating decadent luxuries and diversions, forming an order
reminiscent of the monks, knights and artisans of the Medieval period, to plan
for an alternative culture, either through revolution or more subtle means.
