This winter, I went to the San Francisco area for my vacation. There were two main reasons for this: (1) to see Lily Tomlin in The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe again (and again and again) and (2) to spend a little time in the warm California sun. Both of these goals were achieved, and I had a great time.
Below are a few (quite general
and boring) comments about the trip and some photos from it. You
can (or at least should be able to) link to a larger version of
any of the images by clicking on the thumbnail that appears on
this page.
When the trip was planned,
The Search for Signs... was actually going to close while
we were there (and we had great tickets for closing night), but
the show extended (which is, of course, always a good thing) and
so we still saw that show, but it was not the last one. I'm really
glad to have had the opportunity to see the show again (and from
wonderful seats), and I really had a wonderful time. To the right
is a photo of the outside of the theatre.
It was great to be back in San Francisco. I had only visited once before, and that time was on a business trip, so I really didn't have much opportunity to explore. This time, I had a little more chance to explore. Below are a few photos taken in San Francisco itself (I surprise myself that I didn't take more photos, but perhaps I need to get back into practice -- there was a time when I would have been snapping away the whole time, to the possible annoyance of those around me).

But we didn't spend the whole time in San Francisco. There were other theatre opportunities to be had, as well as various secret (or not-so-secret) urges of mine to see things. So on the first whole day there, my goal of visiting the boardwalk in Santa Cruz was finally realized, as part of a trip to San Jose to see Lynn Redgrave in her play The Mandrake Root. The drive down Highway 1 to Santa Cruz was breathtaking. And yet somehow I didn't take any photos at all. I think it was just one of those things where I kept thinking that we could stop at the next little vantage point and take one, but never actually did it. Oh well.
I do have photos of Santa Cruz though. The following photos are of the beach in Santa Cruz:

I took these photos from the ferris wheel on the boardwalk (yes, we actually went on the ferris wheel):

And yes,
I also actually took off my sandals and waded a little bit in
the ocean, as evidenced by this photo (oh, how artsy;-) ). I think
that his may in fact have been my first time going into the Pacific
Ocean, although I have certainly visited it before.
After a
nice time in Santa Cruz (and a visit to the Olive Garden in Palo
Alto (which is in some ways nothing like the Olive Garden in Times
Square), we went to see The Mandrake Root. To the right
is a photo of the sign outside the theatre (but unfortunately
I just didn't quite have the hand-eye coordination down enough,
such that I didn't get the actual title in the photo.
San Jose Rep has a really wonderful theatre,
and it was really exciting to see Lynn Redgrave in person. I hope
to get to see something else at that theatre soon.
On the Monday night, we saw Carol Channing perform in a benefit. I was really excited to see Ms. Channing perform, and it was an enjoyable evening. And yet, I have no photos, which means that there is nothing to see in connection with this paragraph...
On Tuesday, we went to Berkeley, where we shopped and ate and where I decided that a small side-trip should be made to Berkeley Rep, where Anthony Rapp of course played in Nocturne in the fall (oh, how I had hoped to go to that...). The side-trip was worth it (for me at least!).
Here are a couple of photos of Berkeley (but no photo of Berkely Rep - oh well):

And that, I think, concludes the condensed and somewhat boring version of how I spent my vacation. I hope that you enjoy(ed) the photos.
