Description of Dante's Inferno

Dante's Inferno is described as a massive inverted cone or funnel. The first layer is Limbo, which is surrounded by the river Acheron. The next 4 layers contain people whose sins were Lust, Gluttony, Greed, and Wrath. The layer of the wrathful contains the river Styx, which also serves as a moat around the 6th layer, the City of Dis. Coninuing down the funnel leads to the river Phlegethon and a huge cliff called the Great Barrier. The 8th layer is Malebolge, a series of deep ditches with broken bridges across them. The 9th layer is Cocytus, composed of 4 regions: Caina, Antenora, Ptolomaea, and Judecca. At the bottom of the funnel is a cave with a passageway which leads to Mt. Purgatory.

Descriptions of the Devil

Horns, cloven feet, a face on his back, stinking & hairy
A beautiful youth, male or female
Black or red skin and bat wings
Buried in a lake of ice, flapping his bat wings and chewing on sinners

From The Vision of Tundal:
"Blacker than a crow and shaped like a man except that it had a beak and a spiky tail and thousands of hands, each of which had twenty fingers with fingernails longer than Knights' lances, all of them squeezing unhappy souls. He lay bound with chains on an iron gridiron above a bed of fiery coals. Around him were a great throng of demons. And whenever he exhaled he ejected the squeezed unhappy souls upward into Hell's torments. And when he inhaled, he sucked them back in to chew them up again."
