"Otto-Langen Atmosphere Engine Project"
George has once again fullfilled a paradox by "giving life" to otherwise useless junk and "killing time" simutaniously. His latest re-creation is not only a functioning model, but it also serves as a monument to his "McGuiverism". A very large monument.
First a brief history.......
......The first successful internal combustion to go into production was
the Otto-Langen atmosphere engine, which was also known as a free piston
engine. Nicolaus Otto and Eugene Langen produced this engine in Germany from
1864 to 1878. This engine design was used by many manufacturers including
Crossley of the UK. One of the features of the 1864 engine was the use of
a free piston which turned a flywheel only on it¹s downstroke . The
newly designed roller clutch connects the piston to the flywheel without
the use of a crank. This engine did not compress the gas/air mixture and
the horsepower was low. A 2 HP engine weighed in at a whopping 4,000 pounds
and stood an impressive 10 1/2 feet tall! This early engine was an important
stepping stone for the introduction of the 4 stroke single cycle engine later
developed by Otto in 1876.
In George's words......
......."My engine is pushing 10 feet tall when the piston is at it's maximum
stroke, however the power output is very low. Old engines and models are
often set-up to run at slow speeds, and with no-load, for shows and
demonstrations. At this time I can keep the flywheel turning by firing the
engine one time a minute."
"No welding, no milling nor any lathe turning was used to build this engine. A drill press, belt sander, dremel tool and 3/8 electric drill were the only power tools used on my engine. The limited power tools required, make this an interesting engine to be made in a home workshop."
"The actual displacement is difficult to determine without another engine tear-down, but the deck height is 10 inches with a 1325cc combustion chamber. The stroke is about 24 inches. Various stuff from the "Curbside Parts Supply" were used such as bed frames, a clothing display rack, rotisserie motor, some bicycle parts, and PVC pipe."
"Used Volkswagen parts were donated by Scooter at R & S Performance. The major VW components used include: 1/2 of a 1600cc dual port head, two cylinders, a type III fuel injector and intake manifold, one brake drum, one pipe from a exhaust collector, and the end of an intake manifold pre-heat tube. A raft inflator from K-Mart is used for the supercharger and an air dryer housing is used for the gas tank. The ignition is a Ford Model T buzz coil."
