A Dream Come True, Part 8

Scene 9 (cont.)

Marley: OK, Vicky, you’re doing great, just bear down and push.

Vicky: I’m ready! AHHHH! (she pushes)

Jake: (as Vicky pushes) That’s it, sweetie, in just a few minutes, we are going to be holding our little babies, that’s what you want, isn’t it?

Vicky: (nodding her head) That’s what I want, that’s what I want! Oh God, I have to push again!

Marley: That’s it, Vicky, don’t fight it . . . And the head is out.

Jake: Do you hear that sweetie, the head is out!

Marley: Stop pushing for a second while I clear the baby’s nose and mouth.

Vicky: OK, OK, Jake?

Jake: Right here, sweetie. I’m right beside you. (He gently wipes Vicky’s forehead with a cold cloth)

Vicky: I have to push, can I push?

Marley: Go ahead, Vicky, you’re almost there. (As Vicky pushes) That’s it, Vicky, the shoulders are out, and . . .(baby cries) It’s a girl!!!!

Jake and Vicky: A Girl?

Jake: (starts to cry) Oh, Vicky, I love you so much!

Vicky: I love you, too, Jake! We had a baby girl!

Donna: A little girl! Darling, I’m so happy for you.

Marley: Jake, do you want to cut the cord?

Jake looks at Vicky and smiles.

Vicky: Go ahead, Jake!

Jake walks over and cuts the cord. He sees the baby and starts to cry.

Jake: Oh, Vicky, she is so beautiful!!

Marley then bundles the baby and places her in Michael’s cradle Donna had brought to the cottage. Jake returns to Vicky’s side to await the arrival of the next baby.

Marley: Ok, Vicky, this next baby will take its time, so just relax and wait for the next contraction, ok?

Vicky: Ok!

Jake can’t stop looking over at the cradle to see his new daughter.

Vicky: How is she?

Jake: Oh, Vick, she is perfect!

He walks over and kisses Vicky’s forehead.

Jake: Thank you for making me a dad!

Vicky smiles. Just then another contraction hits.

Vicky: AAAHHH!! I have to push! I have to push again!

Marley: Ok, Vicky, just bear down and push.

Jake: I’m right here, honey, we are half way there, you are doing so great!

Marley: Woah, the head is out!! Stop pushing for a second, the cord is wrapped around the neck.

Vicky: What? Is she ok?

Donna: Marley, is the baby going to be ok?

Marley pauses.

Jake: What? Talk to us, Marley!!

Marley: (A few seconds later, she responds) Ok, the cord is unwrapped. Push, Vicky!!

Vicky: Oh, Thank God. (she starts to push again) Ahhhhh!

Marley: And . . . It’s a girl!! (She holds her up so Jake and Vicky can see.) Congratulations, Mom and Dad, twin girls!

Vicky: (crying) Oh, Jake!! We had our girls!

Jake: (saying through his tears) I am so proud of you!! Our daughters!!

Marley asked Jake to cut this cord, too. And as he was going back to Vicky’s side, Marley stops him. Before he can say a word, Marley places his daughter in Jake’s arms.

Jake: Hi, Pumpkin! Come on, let’s go meet your mom. (Jake takes the baby and places her in Vicky’s arms)

Vicky: Oh, Jake! Look at her, isn’t she the most beautiful baby? Hi, Sweetie, I’m your mommy! Your daddy and I love you so much!

Jake smiles and goes over to the cradle and picks up his first-born daughter and takes her over to Vicky’s side.

Vicky: And look at you, too! You are so precious!! Oh, Jake, we have the most beautiful babies in the whole wide world!

Jake: I have to agree with you there. (he kisses his baby girls and then Vicky)

Marley: Congratulations, you two! I am so very happy for you!

Jake: Thank you, Marley for everything! (He hugs Marley)

Vicky: Jake’s right, Marley! Thank you so much. I don’t know what we would have done without you here.

Marley: (smiles and wipes the tears from her eyes) Well, we are going to leave you alone now. Right, Donna?

Donna is doting over her granddaughters. She’s oblivious to what Marley is saying.

Marley: Donna!

Donna: What darling?

Marley: I think it’s time to leave this family alone before the ruffians come down and will want to meet their sisters.

Donna: You’re right. We will go up and get the boys.

Vicky: Thank you, both for everything

Marley and Donna exit.
