Notes: Post The Gift
-----
Standing in the shadows the blonde vampire looked at the building in front of him, young couples and teenagers piled through the door. Music blared out into the night, heralding a new arrival, or someones departure. Sighing, he tossed his cigarette down, smashed it with the heel of his boot. Slowly he made his way to the door, paying the cover he entered the softly lit gathering place. Quickly he took to the shadows, wading through the mass of people until he could clearly see the dance floor and most of the tables that surrounded it.
The Bronze was packed. Glancing around he took an unneeded breath. She was there, setting at the Scoobies normal table. Hell he knew she was there he had been told over a week ago by Dawn that the gang planned to take her out for a night on the town. Cor, she is beautiful, he thought looking at the slayers attire for the evening. A bright red camisole peeked out from under her long black leather coat. Her trademark slayer pants as he called them could be seen under the table, fitting perfectly to her muscular legs. Looking to her sweet face he could see as always there was the sadness behind her eyes. It was hidden to most; even her best chums couldnt see it but he could. It had been evident the night he saw her walking down the stairs, her hands bleeding from where she had clawed her way out of her coffin. It had only grown with each passing day. Leaning against the post beside him, he watched as they announced last call and the DJ babbled something about grabbing that special someone and holding them close. As the music began to play Tara and Willow walked slowly to the dance floor hand in hand followed by the whelp and his ex-demon girlfriend. The slayer sat there alone, her eyes milling around the room, looking as if she could cry. His inner demon leapt for joy seeing the slayer showing weakness, the other part of him wanted to rush to her side, cradle her in his arms, tell her it would be alright. Their eyes locked as the song began to fade, unsure what forced caused his feet to move toward her, before he knew what had happened he was standing beside her. Dance, Slayer? he said. She looked up, tears rimming her eyes. Great, the only person who wants to dance with me is a neutered vampire she said then winced I said that out loud didnt I? she thought, not in the mood to deal with Spike tonight, or any other night in fact. Shaking her head, No, thanks anyway. Reaching out he grabbed her hand as she rose to leave; he pulled her on the dance floor, holding her tightly to him. I said I didnt want to dance, what part of that did you not understand? she tried to pull away from him, but he would have none of it. Slayer, has anyone told you, you talk to bloody much? I am so going to enjoy staking you when we get outside annoyed at the vampire holding her in his arms, she laid her head on his shoulder with a sigh. Finally the song registered with her, at that moment a voice so soft and soothing was heard in her ear.
Let me be your hero
Would you dance
if I asked you to dance?
Would you run
and never look back?
Would you cry
if you saw me cry?
And would you save my soul, tonight?
Would you tremble
if I touched your lips?
Would you laugh?
Oh please tell me this.
Now would you die
for the one you loved?
Hold me in your arms, tonight.
It was a shock to hear Spikes voice in her ear. She made one last attempt to pull from his arms, but she stopped short as he continued to sing. He was not just singing along with the song, he was singing to her, for her.
I can be your hero, baby.
I can kiss away the pain.
I will stand by you forever.
You can take my breath away.
Would you swear
that youd always be mine?
Or would you lie?
Would you run and hide?
Am I in too deep?
Have I lost my mind?
I don't care...
You're here tonight.
Turning her head so she could look in his eyes, to her surprise she saw, the same tenderness that had once filled Angels eyes when he looked at her. Feeling his hand press her back against his shoulder she relaxed into his strong arms, letting him take away the weight that the world had put on her since she had been resurrected. Spike smiled to himself as her body relaxed, glad that she had stopped trying to fight with him, and was letting the music carry her away.
I can be your hero, baby.
I can kiss away the pain.
I will stand by you forever.
You can take my breath away.
Oh, I just want to hold you.
I just want to hold you.
Am I in too deep?
Have I lost my mind?
I don't care...
You're here tonight.
Tara looked over at them, a faint smile crept over her face as she tapped Willow on the shoulder then pointed to the couple across the room, L-Look, I think they finally figured it out. Willow followed her girlfriends finger and smiled when Spike and Buffy come into view. Good, I was afraid we were going to have to take drastic measures, if they didnt soon get a clue. She kissed Taras cheek, happy to see her best friend was finally realizing something that she and Tara had known the moment they saw Spike sitting in front of the newly risen slayer in the Summers living room. Spike noticed the two witches smiling at him, Cor, you would think they had never seen two people bloody dancing before. Dismissing them he returned his attention to the beautiful blonde he held in his arms.
I can be your hero, baby.
I can kiss away the pain.
I will stand by your forever.
You can take my breath away.
I can be your hero.
I can kiss away the pain.
And I will stand by you forever.
You can take my breath away.
You can take my breath away.
Feeling Buffy, snuggle closer to him, knowing that she did not want the song to end, not wanting the strain of her life to come rushing back just yet. He held her a little tighter, willing the world away so he could just to give her a few more moments of peace.
I can be your hero.
The last word came out as a whisper. When the music stopped they looked in one anothers eyes. He decided to tempt fate. Leaning down he kissed her lips tenderly. At first his lips were gentle pressed against hers, but soon it turned into one of the most passionate kisses that Buffy could have imagined. Willow and Tara stood in awe of Spikes boldness the moment was broken as Xander let out one of his girlish type screams. With that Buffy pulled away from him, immediately the softness that had been in her eyes during the dance replaced with sadness he had seen earlier. Holding out his hand to her, he asked; Walk you home, luv? Without a word to anyone, she nodded. Placing her hand in his, they left the Bronze. Walking in silence both not quite sure how to put what they were feeling into words. Soon they found themselves standing on the bottom step of the Summers house. Spike, her voice sounded small, like that of a child in pain. Thank you, for the dance that is and err. Her voice faded off as he took her hand, bringing it to his lips. He held it there for a moment then released it, My pleasure, pet. Now off to bed with you, dont want to miss any beauty sleep. Grinning as she turned, he strolled over to the tree were he spent most of his nights, keeping an ever-faithful watch over his slayers house. Giving him a sweet smile she went inside. After getting ready for bed, Buffy walked across her bedroom to the window. She glanced out the window to see Spike looking up at her. Smiling she crawled into her bed, the words of the song swirling around in her head. He would be her hero, he would die to make her happy and would die to protect her and Dawn. Feeling safe for the first time since she had been brought back, she slipped into the world of dreams.
