A Look into Nerkuppai

Nerkuppai is a small village situated at 35 Kms from Karaikudi, Capital of Chettinad. To be precise it is 7 Kms from Ponamaravathy. It is a part of the Thiripattur District. There are around 850-1000 people approximately belonging to various temples like,

Pillayarpatti Ilupakkudi Velangudi

 

Nerkuppai in Tamil (language spoken in Tamil Nadu) means load / heap of rice grains. Agriculture being the main occupation of the residents of nerkuppai, The name is no exception.

The Subramania Swami Temple, belonging to the Nagarathar a.k.a Chettiars, was built in the year 1905 & since 1965, once in every 7 years the "Maheshwara Pooja" is performed.

Panayappa Chettiar of the Nemang Kovil built the "Meignana Vinayakar Kovil" while Venkatachalam Chettiar built the "Perumal Kovil".

In all, There are about 15 ponds (Oorani) in the village of which Panayappa Chettiar Oorani, Chetty Oorani, Mela Oorani & Nalloorani were founded by the Nagarathars.

The "Sathappa Govt.High School", founded & formed by the RM.S.Sathappa Chettiar Family was dedicated to the village in 1956. Since it's inception the school has been doing good & educating a large number of the masses.

\ The "Thiagarajan Annamalai Elementry School" was founded & formed by the T. Kanagasabai & A. Kanagasabai Family members. SB.A.Palaniappa Chettiar of Nemang Kovil built the "Alemelu Palaniappa Hospital" which is now taken over & run by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu.

A 'madam' (Chatram), founded by the RM.S famly members in 1877 is still managed by the family members and is successfully functioning.

Apart from the eminent personalities & idols, This village has a grat deal of importance in the Nagarathar history. The "Pilgrimage to Palani" and the "Murugan Kavadi" practice which is performed every year since 1585 was initiated by Kumarappan Chettiar of Nemang Kovil & incidentally happens to be from this village.
