REVIEW

To buy this record is indeed a very good deal my friends and mates in grind, finally all BBC radio sessions of Napalm Death are released in one single album. The first two sessions are classic, with the, er, also classic line up of crust grind Napalm Death (Shane, Mick, Lee and Bill) thrashing away and blasting everything as fast as they (or anyone else) can at John Peels show. Some would say that this is a portrait of the band at the peak of it's carreer, I would say that it is a portrait of one of the peaks and certainly of an important era of the band's history. Lot's of good songs played by the line-up (The Kill, Lucid Fairytale, etc). The second Peel Session, recorded only six months later, with the same Line-Up, is even better, featuring more classics and some rare (and hence not to be found elsewhere) covers like "Walls" (originally by New Enlgand's grind pioneers Siege) and SxOxBx. The third Peel Session presents us with some competent and inpiring musique played by the all new line up (at the time) that recorded the classic "Harmony Corruption". Mitch, Shane, Jesse, Barney and Mick (still on drums and doing a great, great job here, his best in my opinion as a big fan of his work as a drummer). Besides playing (obvious) tunes like "Suffer the children" they play songs written by earlier line ups like "From Enslavement to Obliteration" and "Scum" (necessary, since Dorrian and the others had not recorded this essential song on the previous shows). The sound is quite good and someone (Mick Harris I think) makes funny noises and says funny things between songs. Very nice and entertaining indeed, it shows that Mick has got quite a nice sense of humor. The final four tracks are the newest ones (even though they were recorded in March of 1996, over four years ago as of this writting) featuring the line up that stands to this day with the technical competent and creative Danny Herrera on drums. The sounds features the typical savage/strong live Napalm Death sound, very raw and very powerful at that. This songs were all part of the Diatribes album and the Greed Killing EP, and the new more definied sound of contemporary Napalm Death is present here, well recorded (if not spectacular) and the band gives us quite a decent performance. Overall a great album with a good sound and better than most compilations could be, since it features versions made specially for this show. Unfortunatelly there are no songs from albums like "Utopia Banished" or "Fear, Emptiness, Despair", nevertheless the bands performance here is very good (in all sessions) and it's a worth buy, well worth. It also features liner notes by Malcom Dome (Metal Hammer, not a particularly good magazine but anyway...) which are quite interesting. A carefully planned release featuring unique moments of the bands's carreer.
