Florida Turnpike Toll Booths

Florida Turnpike Toll Booths have large coverings over them to help protect them from the sun and rain.  Yet as I slowed to a stop to pay my $3.00 toll, I noticed a sign reading “WIPERS OFF PLEASE”.

I can't figure out how my windshield wipers (stopped or flapping on high speed) could help or hinder me handing a five dollar bill to the troll-person and waiting for them to return my change.

I tried to think of a place where this particular sign might be appropriate.  I thought of two possibilities:

  • At a drive-in movie theater - so you can see the movie.
  • A full service gas station - so the service man doesn't get his hand cut off while washing your windshield.
Perhaps a more appropriate sign at a toll booth would be “DON'T LEAN ON HORN” or “DON'T GET OUT OF CAR AND CHANGE OIL”?

Windshield wipers.  What the heck?
