John  Ingle (Edward  Quatermaine)
Family patriarch Edward Quartermaine has dispensed advice on corporate takeovers, hostile acquisitions and various business machinations to his children and employees for more than two decades on General Hospital. Actor John Ingle knows a thing or two about passing on what he's learned in the entertainment field, as well. For three decades Mr. Ingle taught drama before he ever began his successful career as an actor. Mr. Ingle recently received the award for Outstanding Scene Stealer at the nationally televised Soap Opera Awards.
The Quartermaine grandsons are proving that they've learned their lessons well, from whatever the source. John Ingle has been credited as the source for dozens of notable acting careers.
Mr. Ingle founded the performing arts departments at both Hollywood and Beverly Hills High Schools, in 1955 and 1964, respectively. Among his stellar students were Albert Brooks, Nicolas Cage, Richard Dreyfuss, Joanna Gleason, Barbara Hershey, Swoosie Kurtz, Stefanie Powers, David Schwimmer and Jonathan Silverman. John retired from teaching in 1985 and began an acting career the same year. He joined General Hospital in 1993.
John was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His family moved throughout the midwest before settling in Tujunga, California, where he finished high school. His thespian pursuits had begun years before in elementary school and followed him until he attended Occidental College to study theater and journalism. He received his theater degree in 1950 and got his teaching credentials the next year.
In 1951, John met Grace-Lynne Martin, an accomplished singer/actress. The couple married in 1954. The next year, Mr. Ingle began teaching at Hollywood High during the day and Los Angeles City College at night. He also taught afternoon classes at UCLA for 15 years. After nine years at Hollywood High, Mr. Ingle moved across town where he eventually spent 21 years teaching at Beverly Hills High.
Mr. Ingle's acting credits include the feature films, Batman and Robin, Death Becomes Her, Robocop II, The Land Before Time, Parts II-V, Heathers and Senseless. His television credits list Beverly Hills, 90210, Cheers, Dallas, Doogie Howser, M.D and many others. Mr. Ingle also enjoys the distinction of being kissed by supermodel Cindy Crawford in two Revlon commercials.
John and Grace-Lynne have five daughters and nine grandchildren. The couple enjoy ballroom dancing, tennis and long walks through their Altadena, California, neighborhood. John is a volunteer for the Pasadena AIDS Services Center. He and daughter Melanie also are co-chairs of the annual "Champions-Run-For-Life" marathon benefiting children with cancer.
