ELISHA
"The Miracle of the Bread"
II. Kings 4:42-44
NOTES
Elisha and the sons of the prophets were _dependent__ on the contributions of the _saints_ for their daily _needs_. Tonight's passage deals with a _small__ contribution from a man.
V. 42- the _gift__ from the man. Such gifts were normally made to the _priest_. However, in Elisha's day, it was normally not _possible_ to do this because of _appity___. So pious Israelites obeyed the _spirit_ of the law and made _contributions_ to men like _Elisha__. This contribution spoke well of this man. It revealed his _faith__ in Jehovah. It identified him as one of the _7000_ who had not _bow_ the knee to _Baal__. This man came from Baal-shalisha-a name that _honor_ Baal.
The _economy_ was down and the temptation would be to _keep_ all for _him-self__.
2 Examples of giving in had times:
A- _David_______ (I. Chron. 22:14) B- churches of __Macedonia__ (II. Cor. 8:2)
He gave to a man who _honored_ the Word of God. He gave a _practical_ gift.
He gave the _first__ - _fruit__ to God. This revealed where his _priority__ were.
We shouldn't give God our _leftovers__. (Mal. 1:13-14)
43- Gehazi _objective_ to the gift. He belittled the _contribution_. But Elisha was _unmoved_ by the criticism.
Criticism can be _contagious_. Ex. Judas
Gehazi's murmuring was _inexcusable_. He had kept close _company with Elisha.
V. 44- The gift was _multiplied__ when it was _given_. This man discovered that giving to God is most _economical__. His gift was _small_ but God multiplied it.
This miracle foreshadowed Christ feeding the _multitudes___:
A- _crowd_ of hungry people. B- took _pity_ on them
C- a few _loafs_ formed the main part of each _meals_.
D- food was _given__, not _sold, to the people E- unbelieving attendant _objective__. F- both used _others_ to feed the crowd G- surplus _remain__.
BUT CHRIST DID MORE: _larger_ crowd, _fewer_ loaves, bigger _meal_
LESSONS
1- God can meet _needs__ from the most _unlikely sources.
2- We are to _give_ all of the time.
3- Stay away from _critics_.
4- We must _give__ before God can _multiply_ it.
5- God is famous for making a _little_ go a long way.
6- You don't have to be _rich_ to _give__.
