Sd.Kfz.221 and 222 are based on the Horch/Auto-Union chassis. From 1936
to 1938, the production relates to Ausf.A propelled by an engine of
3.8 L of 75 hp and whose production will be completed in 1942. This
chassis comprises 4 driving wheels with completely independent suspension
being able each one constantly to become director (this provision will
be removed thereafter) as well as a auto-blocking differential ensuring
that the two wheels on each sides will be driving. The body (with two
doors) is made welded armour-plates. Slits of aiming to kneecap are
laid out in front and to the back of the vehicle which is surmounted
by a turret open on the top (manual rotation). Mesh wires anti-grenades
are laid out on the circumference of the turret. The gunner in the turret
was at the same time the head. The remainder of the crew was composed
of the pilot and the operator radio-loader.
