Z/L Fans: Pro-Z/L Opinions
Please forgive the ranting and raving of some Z/L fans. If you reply to a fan, please be objective and don't send flames. Bear in mind that it's just a cartoon, and nothing to get mean about. And please be patient with the anti-Amelia-people. I was once one of them, and we do eventually learn better than that; so there is hope.

Ever since I saw Slayers Next last summer I thought that Zel/Lina were the perfect couple. It just seemed so natural. There's the obvious reasons that everyone else stated. And also Lina/Zel aren't SO alike (Gourry/Lina) as to make their relationship seem incestuous, and they're also no TOO different (Zel/Amelia) so that it won't work.

They also deserve each other. I mean, Zel deserves better than Amelia. For one thing, the age difference is just wrong. And Zel deserves someone who can make him laugh. Someone who challenges him. Someone who he can respect and who meets his caliber.
And while I like Gourry, Zel just seems to be a better match for her. Intelligence and ability. Also, Zel seems to need her more. And as far as looks go, Zel's almost as good as Gourry. Wild swept hair and a damn sexy voice (at least his Korean one is), honestly, how could Lina pass up this hunk o stone for that dumb blond anyway?

On the matter, Lina and Zel are good for each other. At first I thought Gourry and Lina would make a good cute but when I saw the epsiode with Lina and Zel together, it went a total 180 degrees! Personally, I don't mind Lina Gourry pairing up but it's like mysticdragon3 said, it's too, too predictable... At first I was all for the Usagi-Mamoru relationship but I got sick of it REALLY fast, I mean they broke up once because of bad dreams Mamo-chan had (ugh...)! I mean the most obivous relationship is always the relationship can be tiring. But above all, I can't stand the pairing between Amelia and Zel, I mean I accept the fact the creator chose Gourry and Lina as a couple, but I can't see the couple happenings between the chimera and the princess. I think Hellmaster Phibizo (damn, can't spell his name right) can make a cool coupling with Amelia for some odd reason. I guess that 'cool coupling feeling' hit me when I saw a picture of them (and unforuntely I think the Hellmaster is dead [I didn't buy the last tape of Next yet due to money problems.]). But I think I can stand the Lina-Gourry coupling, I mean I'm a similar condition in real life myself (I'm Lina and my potential other is much like Gourry, sometimes I want to Dragonslave him to hell sometimes). But the Amelia-Zel thing would never work far I'm concerned and the writing's on the wall for that one, unless they have a very unrealistic relationship....

Ok, the Top 10 reasons I think Zel and Lina go great together:

{10} Because I said so.

{9} They compliment each other well in battle.

{8} Amelia is a weenie.

{7} There are times when Lina will do something to help Zel or Zel does something to help Lina, and it surprises the hell outta the both of them.

{6} Once enemies turned lovers? It has a ring to it, y'know.

{5} The way Zel is the only one who can tease Lina without getting smacked.

{4} The way they sometimes know what the other is thinking.

{3} Gourry is an idiot.

{2} The way Lina seems to forget or look over the fact Zel is made of stone.

And the #1 reason is!:

{1} They're just so darn kawaii together!

==

That's it. I have more, but you probably wouldn't have the patience to listen to me rant and rave for hours on end. Thanx!

Silent Steel

Ok, my reasons for pairing Zel and Lina:

(1)
Has any of the others ever made him laugh, or even remotely tried to cheer him up? Not as far as I can tell. Another thing, who, besides her, can tease him without be cruel? Any answers? Don't hear any. And the person who mentions Miwan will be slapped with a rubber fish. Miwan was a GUY, and Zel has NO leanings that way. And here's something I just noticed not that long ago. She diffuses situations where someone's being cruel to him. In her own way, she's protecting him.

(2)
They're a very close match in physical strength. Admittably, he's got an edge over her in stamina, but how many times has she wonked him on the head only to hurt them both like two normal people would doing that? With anybody else, they would constantly be having to check that they're not being too strong, and accidentaly harming their partner. In the arena of strength, when together, they're both human in respects to the other.

(3a)
Both are highly intelligent, and perceptive, while being just a little emotionally stupid at times. Neither could truely be happy with someone who wasn't also a challenge. They enjoy the little teasing-fights they get into, enjoy the verbal sparring of wits.

(3b)
And another thing: They help compensate for each other's emotional flaws. Zel's drive and determination helps Lina with her rather lazy habits, while she tones down his obsession with a cure. And her simple acceptance of him does wonders in boosting his self-confidence, diminishing and wea kening his self-hatred and self-pity quite a bit. His steady calm helps her keep a grip on her wildly emotional self, while she gets him to lighten up quite a bit.

(4)
Up to a point, they're equal in spell-power, but where she has a few higher levels of magic, he's got a more versatile repertoire of adaptable spells. IE: He's got spells he can mutate to apply to other things . . . or combine to get a new effect. You can do this with black magic, but the consequences are much more severe if you goof. Which is worse: accidentally turning yourself into a frog for a brief while, or blowing up your kingdom?

(5)
In the matter of swords, they're pretty much equal. Both are about the same strength, and she has an edge in natural speed while he can outlast her. His accelerated speed doesn't count in swordplay unless he's using hit-and-run tatics. Speed is good in a sword fight, but after a point, it becomes a weakness, as you can't really recover all that fast. Zel's ac celerated speed would most likely leave him wide open if he tried to use it in a swordfight. It would take him longer to bring his sword back around to block a blow than someone else. Despite his skill in running when using the acceleration, it takes a whole 'nother set of reflexes in swordfights.

And there's my rant. ^_^

Disclaimer:

It has come to my attention that people are offended by my site. I can understand that my beliefs were not made clear in the Opinions Section, especially since many of my thoughts are disorganized, undisciplined, and have, over time, changed from what is still posted there. So, let me state my opinions briefly here. I realize that Hajime Kanzaka and Rui Araizumi intended for Gourry/Lina and Amelia/Zel. I accept that those relationships could work and I have no animosity for people with biases that oppose mine. But being an avid beliver in multiple dimensions, possibilities, and "alternate universes", I belive that Lina/Zel could also work. This site is simply for those who, like me, prefer Lina/Zel. Lina/Zel exists outside of the normal Slayers reality and is simply a fanciful "what if" for those with the inclination. ---SO STOP FLAMING ME!!! It's just a cartoon!

5/20/99

This is all stuff everyone knows intuitively. So why write it all out? It's a rant! And you'll be seeing more from me periodically, so strap yourselves in!
And if you don't agree with me, then all of this is just "Blah, blah, blah." I'm not surprised. It's just a rant. Please don't let me, an insignificant ignorant fool, impede your bias and Slayers-viewing pleasure. And just go out and enjoy "The Slayers"! I guess this paragraph was a disclaimer.

1/30/99

Now, I know there are those of you out there going: "mysticdragon3 is advocating a Zel-Lina pairing?! But isn't she the girl that argued for the Akari-Ryouga pairing and against the Ukyo-Ryouga paring by citing the author's intention?" Yeah, yeah. I'm fully aware that the creators of "The Slayers" (Hajime Kanzaka and Rui Araizumi) are advocating an Amelia-Zel paring, and they have also been hinting since the beginning of the series that they want Lina and Gourry to get together. In fact, I bet I could even provide the argument and evidence necessary to support a Lina-Gourry paring. But that's only if I want to be objective about things. Right now, I'm declaring my subjective preference! When an author decides who they want paired up with who, they make sure to create scenes that hint that the characters are in love. Hence, the scenes, lines, and events that imply Lina and Gourry's love for each other. These types of hints inserted by the authors would be the only evidence to support the Lina-Gourry pairing. But in my opinion, if the characters were let to just be, instead of being fashioned to end up with a specific peer, then Lina and Zel would most likely become attracted to each other. They know each other so well and know how to respect each other's needs. I believe that they teach each other a lot about themselves and (as many others have said before) they balance each other's personalities. It would be great if they got together! They are both brilliant, very strong characters, and although that kind of dynamic (strong character: strong character, instead of strong character: weak character) in a relationship would be extrememly hard to write, if done properly, it would be very innovative and much more interesting/complex. At least, much more interesting than the cliche: sorceress partnered with a dumb swordsman, or the other cliche of just a strong character offset by a weak character. This latter cliche is what I believe both the Lina-Gourry and Zel-Amelia pairings to be. In the same way that the authors are getting Lina and Gourry together, they are also getting Zel and Amelia together. Both of these things, I believe, we just have to respect as their decisions. The same way we need to respect other's preferences for romantic pairings that contradict the author's intention. (The Ukyo-Ryouga or Tsubasa-Ukyo fans, for example. And even us Zel-Lina people.) Anyway, that's my rant.

2/4/99

Y'know what? A lot of people back up their Zel-Lina arguments with "becuase all the other main characters wouldn't fit with them" or a kind of process of elimination. But I don't think that is really valid. Zel and Lina are great for each other in and of themselves. Even if Zel and Lina weren't obligated to end up with someone from the series, or to end up with anyone at all, they would still probably fall in love. I think the true test of a romantic pairing is if the characters have a choice of staying single or ending up with anyone in the world (not just in the series), the characters, as people, would still fall in love. It's not if a certain romantic pairing will fit better into a storyline or group dynamic in a cast of characters, but if their personalities are compatible. By compatible, I mean, they get along well with each other, enjoy each other's company, make each other happier, and learn from each other to grow as individuals into better people. (One really cute sign that people are falling in love is if they notice all the little details about each other [appearance, personality, habits, etc.], know each other very well, their happinesses are very important to the other, and they know how to accomodate each other's needs. And of course, I believe I've seen all these signs between Zel and Lina.) And I'm sure you've already heard from other Zel-Lina fans, all the reasons why Zel and Lina would make each other happy.---So, WAHOOOOO! LINA AND ZEL!!! ^v^

5/4/99

Zel hates himself and is hurting inside, and thus, he does need someone to accept him and comfort him. But there's more to Zel than just pain. He loves the challenge of a fight and outwitting opponents. C'mon! Y'know he does! That smirk on his face before a fight, the way he likes to tease and be intellectual at the same time, ... So what I'm saying is that although Zel needs kindness, that's not all he needs. Even if he had never been cursed and ended up hating himself and hurting inside, he's still be the type that loves challenges and sparring wits. That's what he originally began as, as a person, and that's what I think he truly is. And if that's what he truly is, then that's the part that needs to be touched in order to constitute true love. Enter Lina. ^_~ Not only does she have the wit and challenge to really mean something to Zel's true self, but she also is comforting in her own way. Sometimes, especially for those usually uncomfortable with feelings and getting all mushy, it's more comforting to be cheered up and acting normal and doing things that are fun, instead of outright hugging and comforting and saying "I'll love and protect you." It even sounds weird when I actually type it out! Subtlety and innuendo is the way to go with such types as Zel. And Lina as well! She is able to be caring, but you know she's still uncomfortable with being all mushy and everything. That's why she avoids romantic topics and actions, or blushes easily at romance concerning herself. Instead, Lina teases and cheers people up; it's her indirect way of saying that she cares. This way, she saves face, so she prefers it. Lina and Zel are on the same wavelength concerning romance, so they approach it with equal caution. Coincidentally, this ensures that neither will be scared off. So they continue to inch closer to each other, without really realizing it. But it happens, nonetheless! ^_~
Here's the stuff on Lina and Gourry. He's sweet, treats her like a queen, and makes her angry. You know she likes challenges, and so she likes teasing and beating up on Gourry. It could be she likes that he can get her riled up. Lina also likes to win; no problem against Gourry. And what girl doesn't like to be taken care of by a sweet gentleman type? Except when it makes you look and feel like a weakling. Lina is a formidable woman of heart, mind, and body, and she would prefer to keep her image. Gourry is nice, but there's not much more too him. He's a good friend, a great friend, a best friend. Just not a lover. Lina deserves so much more! She's a complex, demanding woman, and I'll wring the neck of anyone who will short-change her! But, oh! Hey, wait! Guess what? Zel's got wit and strength to provide lots of challenge. Lots of challenge means lots of exictement. Lina loves excitement. Why else would she choose a life of travel and adventure? Zel's wit and challenge also gives an unexpected edge, not to mention his cunning, devious, sometimes, evil edge. So for all you people who love Lina's chaotic side, there's a Zel-Lina reason for you! Sure Lina loves to relax every once in a while with pampering, or fantasies of a "royal" life. (Married to a prince! ^v^ Hee-hee!) But like The Maxx says, "Limitless pleasure is highly overrated." Lina happy in constant and perfect stability? Not quite, my friend. ^_~ That's what Zel is: not quite nice. He tries to hide it, but he's a caring, devoted person. He's the perfect balance. Why should Lina OR Zel change for someone when they're good for each other, the way they are? Besides, sometimes Zel needs a good whap to the head. And sometimes Lina needs to be told to stop and think. (Not that she wouldn't eventually, on her own.) Well, I've gotta end this discussion. Sooooooo... I think that complex characters can only be happy with other complex characters. No, wait. It's possible for a complex person to enjoy another's simpliciy, but that's not what I personally prefer in this case. If Slayers were a bishojo, it would be easy to accept simple characters, because that's the way pretty much everyone is in these bishojo worlds. But Slayers has so many different types of people. So it's so hard to say, "Oh, Gourry and Lina, and Amelia and Zel are great together" when you have the contrast of Lina and Zel's complex characters right there! Some temptations shouldn't be passed up. And that's all I've got to rant about that! ...For now, anyway... ^.~ Hee-hee...

5/20/99

One of the most important things in a romance story is the chemistry between the characters. [Hey, Pr. Barber! I learned something! ---Who knew?] And for us Zel-Lina fans, we see Gourry and Lina, and Amelia and Zel, and we just go "HUH?!?! They're supposed to go together?! You've got to be joking, right?". That's just the way it is. We just don't see the chemistry. Blame the casting. [hee-hee ^_~ ] Anyway, for us Zel-Lina fans, Amelia will always be the little-sister-type and Gourry will always be the big-brother-type. That's how they were introduced AND how we've learned to know them. It's like we have a biological inability to picture them with anyone other than a person on the same personality level as them. When I say "personality level", I mean people with similar personalities, attitudes stemming from the same types of thinking processes...---Ah, heck! I guess that idea will always be subjective. ---Well, I know what I mean! So. What I'm saying is, we can see Gourry and Sylphiel, or Amelia and....oh, I don't know....let's say...Prince Toma of Togenkyo, because they seem more similar to each other, in world view or even physical age and appearance. Yeah, the physical age and appearacne sounds kind of shallow, but it is a big thing! It's only bad if it makes us hate them. And we don't! In fact, it makes us fond of them...but like siblings. Actually, it's not just Gourry and Amelia's appearance that makes them the sibling-type, but also the way they act and think. That's how they come off. And that's the big difference. Even with good, sound, arguments for Gourry-Lina and Amelia-Zel, I just cannot accept them. I instantly reject such arguments for the sole reason of coming to know Gourry and Amelia as sibling-types, and having that feel for them. Even with logical arguments against such feelings, I cannot reason away the emotional preference. Humans are funny that way. I think Socrates proved that when he was condemned: Humans will sometimes fall into following emotions over logic. [OK. Now we're taking this issue just a little too seriously. Ya think?! Whatever.]
In fact, here's the argument right here:
Let's start with Gourry and Lina. Lina's an independent, strong, brilliant, and kind of selfish, arrogant (but in a fun way) person. The last thing she wants is someone to bog her down, make her the subordinate. In fact, she loves being the dominant one. Gourry lets her do that. With his comedic contrast, Lina is able to indulge in a little arrogance, by seeing and easily asserting her superiority in both mind and strength. It's kind of a high; very enjoyable to be so superior. And then there's the idea that someone who is and has always had to be so independent and strong by herself, secretly, occasionally gets tired of playing the role. And that sometimes, it would be nice to be the one to be taken care of. And Gourry, being the nice guy that he is, babys [is that a word?] Lina, even to the point where it gets insulting. But still, it's nice to feel safe and taken care of. All the pieces are simple and they fit in nicely.
Here's another simple dynamic: Amelia and Zel. Let's see...He's the cold, aloof person who's really hurting and alone inside. And she's the girl over-flowing with love to give, particularly for him. He instinctively pushes her away, untrusting of the world, and afraid of being hurt. But she nobly stays devoted to him and never gives up. And we, the audience, know that with a heart as pure, innocent, and good as hers, she would never hurt him. [A-achem. Sorry.] She's determined to teach him to open up, because perhaps all the time he's wanted physical strength, he's really needed emotional strength. Even to the point where he can be freely emotive, comfortable with affectionate feelings, and how to express them with ease. Just like her---even if her example is a little over the top. At another angle, her idealism is supposed to alleviate his cynicism or teach him to be more trusting.
Yes, they're good arguments. It seems that all the pieces fall in place. It's all soooo easy to see. I guess that's why it's not satisfying. Because, for me, all the pieces don't fit. There's something missing. As a viewer, I want more out of a story, especially when the characters are capable of so much more. When characters have so much more potential and depth, the simple answers are just so superficial.
I guess what I'm looking for is being real. Sure it's nice to be given all those nice things so easily: protection, support, an affirmation of one's own worth (mentally, emotionally, physically). But [to more or less quote Thor] how much greater the honor to earn such affirmation from an equal. Someone not quite so willing to relinquish such valuables so easily. Once stuggled for and earned, when it does come, is it not so much more intense? [Gawd. Now I'm talking like Thor!] When you strive to prove yourself, then you really have proven who you really are. When you earn it, the process makes it real. You can be consoled and told by someone who cares for you unconditionally (unconditional of the truth) that you, Lina Inverse or Zelgadis Greywiers are a brilliant, strong person. Or you can be challenged by the other, to prove it, and succeed. The point, people, is that Lina and Zel are not quite so simple individuals. So 2-dimensional relationships concerning them are not believable or realistic. What does make sense is Lina and Zel in relationships with as much complexity and depth as they themselves have.
Again, if you don't want to agree with me, feel free to whap me upside the head. ["whap", not a flame! ;o;]

11/6/99

In case I haven't said it already, I'm going to say it again: One of the reasons I don't like the cannon pairing is because it's just plain mean. Amelia's so nice and everything, and Zel's all cold and mean to her. It's as if he wants to make her as pessimistic as him. The whole idea of idealistic, innocent Amelia turning disillusioned, is just sad. But better demonstrating my objection is Gourry/Lina. I never really liked how she kept beating up on the poor guy. I mean, Akane pounding Ranma is one thing. Sometimes Ranma's too arrogant and insulting and EVERYONE (in the audience) just wants to pummel him; so Akane should. But Gourry being annoyingly stupid isn't really intentional. He's all sweet and innocent, and just trying to understand or be helpful as best he can, and Lina beats him to mush. It's sure as hell funny, but not really justified. Even if he is being unbelievably annoying, the big guy doesn't mean to. So in the end, when looking back, there's just this bad feeling of guilt inside, about those realtionships. ---But that's just me.

8/12/99

Another point is that, although both Gourry and Zel can see through Lina's facades (usually facades of overconfidence), Zel is better suited to dealing with them. Gourry is dumb as a brick, but he's sensitive and can have emotional insights. The only problem is, he's so straightforward about things like that, that he'd embarrass Lina to death. He just doesn't understand that although emotions are a very normal part of life and easy for him to talk about, Lina doesn't think it's normal to expose your vulnerability until life and death situations. Zel, on the other hand, thinks the same way as Lina, and would know to make her face whatever is bothering her, but would help her (and himself) save face in front of the others. It's all just part of his vast intelligence. I think it makes Zel more trustworthy. He would be able to understand, handle things, and not make it such a big deal. I think Lina would feel much safer that way.

9/8/99

In Screenwriting class, we learned that in a story, a main character has a flaw, and by the end, they learn to change and improve as a better person. Usually, the event in the story brings about this lesson. An event, a person, or a person who causes an event, brings out something better in the character.
This sounds very much like the idea of soulmates presented in "Good Will Hunting": a soulmate is someone who challenges and essentially teaches you to become a better person.
So in terms of Lina and Zel...
Lina is, well, I guess you could say she starts off with the flaw of selfish intolerance. She won't stand for anything that bugs her. I guess Gourry could bring out the tolerance in her, but that's not the majority of the effect he has on her. When we think of Lina and Gourry, it's mostly him angering her and her not able to take his stupidity anymore, and then getting angry. But that doesn't mean that Lina has not learned from Gourry to be more tolerant. Slowly, she accepts his stupidity and leans to expect it and sometimes accept it.
But that's not a very fun story. ^.~
I guess Lina could also be said to have the flaws of arrogance and selfishness. Not that she doesn't know her limits, but she certainly likes to flaunt the great power she has. That, and her life of doing whatever she wants for herself. This selfishness could include greed, the way she mercilessly uses others to get what she wants, etc. [Disclaimer: These are just Lina's flaws, not her truly predominating charactaristics. Because if they were, we wouldn't like her so much, right? Anyway---]
The point is that Zel brings out Lina's caring for others, not to mention her humility. Lina has to work a little harder when she sparrs swords or witts with Zel. She realizes that sometimes she as to stop all the boasting, realize he's a challenge, and really work to win. And when she loses or makes a silly mistake, Zel certainly gives her a dose of humiity. [It's quite funny! ^v^ ] Zel also brings out Lina's caring. When he's around and sad, she tries to cheer him up, be considerate of him (discreetly, seemingly indirectly), change the subject when it's hard for him (and not necessary to bring up or face), etc. Lina turns into a very gentle sympathetic person.
And we know Zel has A LOT of flaws. Generally, he can be described as an obsessive, cold, ruthless jerk. In his obsession, he has completely forsaken others and become totally selfish. So in a screenplay, what does the audience want to happen? For Zel to change into a better, more caring person. We also want him to be happy in enjoying life because he's also flawed in his pessimistic ways and constant depression. [You may be asking why we like Zel if that's what we think of him. Well, like I said with Lina, those are just his flaws. Zel can be a noble, honorable, funny guy. Not to mention the fact that his persistence and hard working nature make him an incredibly impressive and admirably strong person, as well as a awe-worthy swordsman and sorcerer. We also admire Zel because of his intelligence and cunning. So anyway, I don't feel guilty anymore, let's get on with it.]
Lina really brings out his happiness and ability to try to enjoy life. Around her, he even tries out making jokes or witty remarks. Lina, also being his match in witts and intelligence, has won Zel's admiration and this urges him to respect and maybe care about others. Lina brings out something better in Zel so that maybe he can become a better person. Lina can also be quite noble in her persistence and personal strength. Zel recognizes this (he even said) and admires her even more for it. (And of course, the funny part of the relationship:) Lina also teaches Zel directly, not to be such a jerk. If it wasn't for his stone skin, she'd really let him have it. But until then, she just has to settle for giving her a piece of her mind, quite loudly. Or maybe occaisionally throwing something at his head.
I just thought this "bringing out something better in a person" was an interesting idea for love. Although I still think real love is when you see something in someone, a quality that you cherish in the whole universe, that you would do anything to preserve. Then, it's not even important that the love is returned; you're only interested in preserving that precious quality in someone. Even being around that person to enjoy their qualities comes second to preserving that person and making them happy.

1/23/2000

As someone once pointed out, we Zel/Lina people are more apt to build upon characterizations of Lina and Zel (and other characters) from the 1st season. No matter how subtle those characteristics were, we'll emphasize certain select things out of proportion. But does it really matter? It serves our purposes. We're desperate to justify our preferences. Yes, pathetic, I know. But it keeps us happy. This is, again, in keeping with the quest for each of us to enjoy a series in our own individual ways. As I always thought, it's Ok to be delusional about the little things in life, as long as it keeps you happy that way. And to quote/paraphrase another person I can't remember: "Only us gaijin are crazy enough to have Lina/Zel biases." And yet, it's not necessarily being delusional because what we choose to see or emphasize, or in other words, have a preference for, is an expression of ourselves. Our opinions come from something inside ourselves, trying to be expressed.
But I do feel kind of sorry for Amelia-chan or good ol' Gourry when they're made too 2-dimensional (in Zel/Lina fanfics).
Please disregard this idiot.

3/18/00

Lots of times, I don't like the Gourry/Lina thing because I just feel sorry for the guy. He really just doesn't understand some things, and Lina's pounding him into the ground for it. ;_; It's really not fair since he's not _trying_ to be annoying. At least when Lina pounds on Zel it's because he deserves it.
Oh, yeah...Why _doesn't_ Lina ever annahilate Zel when he hits her or something? Before she remembered his stone skin would just hurt her, she would just complain when he berated/made fun of her or something. Hmph. Maybe she's just not very inclined to hurt him.

5/19/00

One important thing to mention is the cliche of coupling. Some cliches are done to death, while others become cliches for a good reason. The typical bishoujo-type couple with Amelia and Zel is an example of a cliche that's done to death. The dumb swordsman and dominating sorceress thing with Gourry and Lina is also done to death. Heck, even Marion Zimmer Bradley was against those! And then there are some cliches that become common because they are good and people want them often. This is the Sylphiel/Gourry (and Ryouga/Akari) catagory. Sure, the dynamic is simple and ancient, but seeing it is SO DAMN CUTE!!!

10/19/00

Last weekend I saw "Ruin Explorers". I liked the sorceress/swordsman pairing in Rasha/Migel, then I realized that I had said something earlier about not liking cliche couplings. Well, I guess it's not that I don't like cliche couplings; it actually depends more on the personalities of the individuals in the cliche couplings. I mean, I like Akari/Ryouga, and their pairing could possibly be considered cliche or not as exciting as Ryouga/Ukyo. The difference between Rasha/Migel and Lina/Gourry is mostly in the personality of the swordsman. Rasha beats up Migel for being blunt and rude, while Lina beats up Gourry for being ignorant (more like innocent). Gourry is such a nice gentleman; we all know he doesn't mean to be rude. Maybe teasing, but never really rude. I just don't like people beating up on nice guys (or nice girls for that matter).
