The little-known late-series Japanese TargetMaster recolor of Jazz, and really an obvious choice for a repaint. Mind, it's not like there's a lot of options. The black and white simply swap places, yet it works so well on Stepper, especially with the gold to add a little pizazz.
On a side note, I feel Jazz is actually one of the weaker PVCs in the whole set. The pose is awkward and weird, his thighs are oddly long, and the whole back-roof thing is just... I dont know why they did it like that at all.
No, I didn't adhere to Jazz's PVC color layouts for Stepper here. Mainly because I wanted Stepper to stand out a little more, but also because bits of Jazz's color layout make no damn sense. So he's much more toy-y. Most of my repaints are like that. They tend to be more interesting arrangements.
This was the first one I did, and I think it shows, most certainly in person if not so much in the pictures. The Chaos Black I had was starting to show its age and get thick, so I added a drop of water to thin it back out a little. Maybe I should have used two, as the end results ended up streaky and clumping a bit, which I fixed in later paint jobs (like Airstrike).
Also, the Burnished Gold doesn't spread evenly, needing several coats just to get the damn stuff to actually cover everything. It didn't seem to matter if I had a base coat of acrylic under the Gold or not. This is especially annoying on the rifle, which was gold simply because hey, all the other silver-chrome bits were. (Just figger this is pre-TM Stepper.)
The flame on the chest wasn't a lot of fun to paint, but hey, I got it working. It's not quite as sharp as I'd like, but then again, the raised sections of the chest didn't make it easy. (Yeah, I could have filed them down, but that'd take effort.)
Speaking of not fun, I took an Xacto knife to the insides of the peg-holes for his waist, arms and head to scrape off a layer of that damn pewter paint so maybe they can swivel without sticking and breaking the peg off in the socket. SMOOTH MOVE, TAKARA.
I have a profanity-filled rant about that for later.
