Eastern Condors[very good quality][lbx, Cantonese w/ English subs][93 min][7/1987][Dir: Sammo Hung][Stars: Yuen Biao, Sammo Hung, Lam Ching-Ying, Dr. Haing S. Ngor, Joyce Godenzi, Yuen Wah, Yuen Wo-Ping, Yasuaki Kurata, Phillip Ko, Billy Lau, James Tien, Billy Chow, Corey Yuen, Wu Ma, Melvin Wong, Dick Wei, Chan Lung, Kay Lay, Chin Kar-Lok, Hsiao Ho, Charlie Ching, K.K. Cheung] This is the Hong Kong take on the Dirty Dozen , but instead of a dozen, this crew is short two eggs. When the war in Vietnam was over, the United States pulled out and left a secret stash of munitions hidden in the jungles. Fearing that the munitions dump would fall into the wrong hands, the United States military orders a commando team to go into Vietnam and blow up the dump. The commando team, taking part in the military operation called "Eastern Condors", are 10 Chinese Americans who are serving time for various crimes. The team is made up of: Szeto Chan (Charlie Ching), the Ching Brothers-Dai Hao (Billy Lau) and Dai Kong (K.K. Cheung), Stuttering Keung (Kay Lay), Yun Yen Hay (Yuen Wo-Ping), Ma Puk Kan (Chan Lung), Judy Vu (Corey Yuen), Nguyen Siu Tran (Chin Kar Lok), Phan Man Lung (Hsiao Ho), and Tung Ming Sun (Sammo Hung). If the mission is a success, the players will get freedom and $200,000 to spend. Lam Ching Ying plays the Lieutenant who will lead them in Vietnam. Once the commandos arrive in Vietnam, they meet up with some Cambodian guerrillas (led by Joyce Godenzi) to help them on their path towards the dump. The path to the munitions dump is rocky and filled with a lot of bumps being the sneaky VC, death tolls, and sell-outs, but in the end, the mission is a success. I found this flick to be entertaining. There are lots of explosions, a good end fight between Sammo, Yuen Wah, Yuen Biao, Dick Wei, and Yusuaki Kurata. Also I kinda liked the killing tactics of Sammo (shooting reeds at the enemy), Yuen Biao (falling from trees), and Mina's (coming up through water to slash victims).

This disk was put out by Tai Seng. It is letterboxed with the English subtitles in the black bars. The audio is Cantonese. A lot of people complained about this transfer being a little dark, but in my opinion, I thought it was OK. I have seen worse. The DVD's transfer blows the LD away in terms of picture quality but I will not fork over my loot for it. The DVD is out of synch with audio and I hate that. I will stick to the LD.

Eighth Happiness[excellent quality][lbx, Can/Man w/ 7 optional subs, incl. Eng][87 min][2/1988][Dir: Johnnie To][Stars: Chow Yun-Fat, Raymond Wong, Jacky Cheung, DoDo Cheng, Cherie Chung, Petrina Fung Bo-Bo, Fennie Yuen, Wong Kwan Yuen, Charlie Cho, John Sham, Karl Maka, Teddy Robin Kwan][Cinema City]The flick was released during Chinese New Years. The flick is about three brothers and their love life. The older brother is Fang Chien Hui (Raymond Wong) who is the breadwinner of the household. His job is the host of some cooking show for ladies. The brother in the middle is Fang Chien Lang (Chow Yun Fat), an aspiring actor who sponges off of big brother. Lang has a nice girlfriend who is an air hostess (DoDo Cheng) but he would rather use his fruity charm to flirt with other woman. The youngest brother is a shy comic artist named Fang Chien Sheng (Jacky Cheung). Basically the movie is about how the three brothers get their match, Lang has himself a girlfriend with the air hostess and Sheng marries his crush (played by Fennie Yuen). That leaves Hui. His life is void of a woman until he meets up with a Cantonese opera singer, Wu Hsiu Fung (Fung Bo Bo), and falls in love with her. The relationship goes sour as Fung finds out that Hui was the mastermind behind the prank calls that Lang placed to her house late at night. Because of the prank calls, Fung did not sleep well and in turn, her performance suffered onstage during a Canto Opera performance that led to her being booed off the set. At another Canto Opera performance for the play Legend of the Purple Hairpin, one of the lead performers suffers from an asthma attack. Hui, with luck on side, will not be part of the play. It is his chance to let Fung and everybody know that he is sorry. This is a highly enjoyable movie. The ending was great as everybody dressed up in Cantonese Opera garb to help urge Fung to accept Hui's apology. Don't miss it!
