When and What: Early 1940's This card photo was taken sometime after the 1939 Ford in the picture was manufactured. Probably in the early to mid 1940's. At the top of the picture you can see the holder for the lone incandescent light bulb that used to light up this intersection originally. Later more modern incandescent lamps were mounted on horizontal extenders from poles (1950's) and then modern metal poles with mercury flourescent lights came along in the later 50's or 60's. Originally there was one light at this intersection and another one where shoreline drive turned off. These were very similar to ordinary household use bulbs but unfrosted clear glass, and not very bright. The streets were dark by todays standards, despite this very little crime existed. |

Picturing Lake Minnetonka
A Post Card History by James W. Ogland and published by the
Minnesota Historical Society. Graphics of far greater quality and variety
than anything you'll find on the net, unless of course you visit the Minnesota
Historical Society. The book is filled with fascinating historical information
about the Lake Minnetonka area. A great gift for anyone who lives near the
"Great Waters" or once did. It is also a great way to support your
historical society and works of local historical importance. I know this sounds like an advertisement but I'm not affiliated in any way to anyone involved with "Picturing Lake Minnetonka". I love history, and believe it's important. If you like what I have on this site you'll probably want this book. |
