Compass Calibration & Variance

Some models of the Dodge Caravan & Plymouth Voyager came with an optional overhead console that had a combination thermometer & compass installed.  From time to time it becomes necessary to recalibrate the compass.  Calibrating the compass is a simple task and only takes a few minutes.  Let's look below and see how to do it.  This applies to Generation 1 vans from '84-'90

Do not attempt to set the compass near large metal objects, such as other vehicles, Large buildings, or bridges.

Park the vehicle on a flat surface, facing any direction.  Close the doors and start the engine.

Make sure the lamps in the overhead console are turned off and the vehicle doors are closed during calibration!!!

Insert a paper clip, jewelers screwdriver, or similar object into the calibration switch(driver's side hole) and push once.  The display will change to "C1".  When the display reads "C2" turn the vehicle the opposite direction and push the calibration switch again.  The display will stop blinking and read a constant "C2".  Within 5 seconds, the display will indicate the outside temperature and the direction the vehicle is facing.

Setting the Variance

Setting the variance you ask.  Variation is the difference between magnetic north and geographic north.  In some area's the distance between the two is great enough to give false readings and if this happens the variance must be set.

To set the variance park the vehicle facing geographic north.  Close the doors and start the engine.  Insert a paper clip, jewelers screwdriver, or similar object into the variance switch(passanger side hole) and push once.  The display should read "NT".  Hold the vehicle at this setting until the display returns to normal.  The variance is now set.

Do not attach magnetic devices such as magnetic CB antennas to the roof as they can cause the compass to give false readings
