A worthy award winner

It's been a while since I've named an Asshole of the Week, but somebody today merits nomination. Today's winner also has the honor of being the first foreign winner, and only the second woman (Cynthia McKinney was the other, so she's in good company). Without further ado, let me introduce this week's winner - German Justice Minister Herta Däubler-Gmelin.

It is well known that Germany is opposed to the American policy on Iraq. However, Ms. Däubler-Gmelin took it one step farther, and was quoted in the Schwäbisches Tagblatt as saying the following:

"Bush wants to divert attention from his domestic problems. It's a classic tactic. It's one that Hitler also used."

Ms. Däubler-Gmelin denies saying this, and the government of Germany has apologized, however, the newspaper that published that quote is in her constituency, so I have little reason to doubt its validity. I wonder what Bill O'Reilly, who already has it in for the Germans, will have to say about this. I'll be sure to be watching at 5.

The Associated Press is reporting that a congressional report released today shows that there was sufficient credible intelligence information regarding the likelihood of a terrorist attack on the United States prior to September 11.

The best way to swap porn over the net?

That's right. Someone else has made an offer for Napster. This time it's a Spanish pornography corporation. And they're offering three million bucks for it! Must sell a lot of smut in Spain.

Some loopholes are just disgusting

Did you know that in Arizona, a gynecologist could be a registered sex offender - and still keep his license. Or a pediatrician could be a convicted pedophile under the laws of Arizona.

In fact, a loophole in Arizona law doesn't require police agencies or the courts to report arrests or convictions to professional licensing boards.

In addition, most boards, with the exception of the state Board of Nursing, don't even require members to report their own arrests until their licenses come up for renewal. Sometimes that's one to three years later.

That is just unreal, especially in this day and age.

There are just some things that won't win you votes

Vermont Governor Howard Dean announced today that he would recognize the marriage rights of same-sex couples if elected president.

I would think that statements such as this would make you a hard sell, even within your own party. Personally, I'm neutral on the issue, but from a rational point of view, it's going to be unpopular with religious conservatives and it will be more expensive, as those couples will be able to get benefits.
