As many of you know, I'm a big fan of Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly. Today on his show The O'Reilly Factor, he was quite critical of the American public since a greater number of us did not watch President Bush's speech on Monday. According to Fox News, the only network to carry the speech, the speech was seen by 17 percent of the American public. O'Reilly said that to NOT view the presidential address was "Un-American."

Mr. O'Reilly, you are a few years older than I, and you should indeed recall the times where that particular term originated. When you uttered that word, the first image that came into my head were those of McCarthyism or its legacy. Despite the fact that we are at war, this is not the time that we should live in fear of our own people; those words came from our own leader. However, I do agree with what you said in that segment that there needs to be an increase in political participation in the general electorate. With better political participation across the political spectrum, our leaders in Congress would have a better idea of what Americans really think rather than what extremists, who make up the largest bloc of voters, really think.

UPDATE: There is now a final score coming out of Minnesota. The Angels have won this time, beating the Twins 6-3.

Don't believe everything you read on the Net

It read in part: "On Oct. 18, 1857, the first Filipinos landed on the shores of Morro Bay, California, on a Spanish galleon called the Nuestra Seņora de Buena Esperanza, which translates to 'The Big Ass Spanish Boat.' "

The article, which appeared last week on the front page of Washington State University's student newspaper, The Daily Evergreen, was supposed to celebrate racial diversity and inform readers that October is Filipino-American History Month.

Okay. This has to be one of the most boneheaded mistakes I have ever seen. I can understand the writer making the error - barely. However, it had to get by her editor as well. It's so obvious that the translation is not correct, even if you don't know the language - and I'm sure that someone on the staff speaks fluent Spanish. It's a scary state of affairs when "no one suggested it be removed because the information appeared on a Web site that appeared to be credible." These are the same people that will post The Onion as real news. If that had happened when I was in J-school, the writer and editor would have been canned.

I saw the show on CBS, and Letterman said that other entertainers had stretches of highway named after them, including Tina Turner and Travis Tritt. Which leads me to the following: I may not be David Letterman, but I grew up in a much smaller town than he. I probably don't merit a whole FREEWAY, but a street would be nice. Therefore, if the mayor of Barre, Vermont is reading this, and has a street he feels like renaming to say, "Brian Sinclair Boulevard," get in touch with me, and we'll go over the details.
