Below is an account of the event by Sergio the fan who recorded it

Milano Marittima (In english would be Milan by the Sea) is a quiet family style seaside resort , located in the Adriatic Sea in front of the Jugoslavian coast , about 300 km form the real old big and indeed very earthy Milan. Since my early childhood my parents and I used  to spend the summer holidays there.

In 1972 I had the incredibly lucky opportunity to be on the spot exactly when Rory did a gig. It was my second concert. The first being the previous February in Milan during the Live in Europe tour. I presume that the concert was part of the warm up tour of the brand new Rory Gallagher Group with Lou Martin on keyboards and Rod DeAth on Drums.

The venue was the Papagajo (parrot in Spanish) a very small disco club with an audience more interested in drinking cocktails and chatting to each other than to pay attention to the music.

I recorded the event with my very cheap portable mono cassette recorder. I even made a few photographs during the concert but the lights were too dim and I didnt dare using my flash. So the only printable photo is the one of the poster that can be seen on the cocer of the CD.

The sound quality of the recording is very low and I didnt try to improve it in any way. The digital mastering has been done by a friend of mine using his PC equipped with a standard 16 bit soundblaster card.

I never get fed up of listening to different versions of Rorys songs live as he never played the same way twice.

Although the audio quality of this gig is not the best (not bad thought) it is a 'rocking concert.

10 pure minutes of Rory with 'Bought and sold and some great slide in 'Jacknife Beat'

For those of you who like to hear Rory at his bluesy best then this is the bootleg for you . This is a three Cd of which not only is the playing excellent (of course) but the quality of the bootleg is also first class.

If you like Rory at his more blues less heavy rock style then this is the concert for you.

With the new accoustic album on the way (hopefully) this is an excellent taster to kep us going. On French TV is a 19 tracks accoustic boot of mostly excellent quality. I have always believed that Rory enjoyed himself more and was far more relaxed playing accoustic (feel free to disagree), as opposed to the in your face all out electric that we all love and would give anything to be able to emulate.

If the official album is better than this we are in for a real treat.

Belfast has always been Rorys second home and the concerts feel just that little bit special. Rory although not from there was regarded as one of them an dyou can see the respect was mutual. Mind you as a Derry man I always felt the same when Rory played in Derry so perhaps it was just the personality of the man who could make each of us  feel special.

The quality of this bootleg is excellent (A big 9 out of 10) so I presume it was a live radio concert (anyone?).

The concert has a very bluesy feel to it  - what I would call more media friendly blues (which Rory of course palys better than anyone else)

Kicking off with Tattood lady and finishing with Bullfrog Blues this bootleg rocks from beginning to end.

Both the quality of the boot and Rorys playing  (and the band of course) are first class.

If you want to get your head shaking and your foot tapping put on the headphones and let go.

With the hopefully soon arrival of the accoustic album I thought it may be a good idea to put up some tracks from the NO1 (IMO) accoustic boot around.

This is a massive 38 track boot from concerts and radio shows throughout the world.

It is particulary interesting to hear the same tracks from different concerts and time periods and shows Rorys veratility and skill.

Rory appears cool calm and relaxed throughout and it has always amazed me the range of the man .From jumping screaming Strat player to quite thoughfull accoustic player.

The year of this boot will of course have special memories for us Rory fans. I have heard many reports ot the quality of his concerts in his last year so I was interested to hear this one.

It may not be his best concert ever but I hear no hint of the devastating problems to come. It appears to me a bit slow and Rorys voice a bit laboured but this may be the recording or just my over active  imagination.

I Like this Boot, well I like all Rory concerts , but I really  like this one.

It doesn't have all my favourite songs, it doesn't have what I regard as the no1 Rory line-up. But it is different

The Quality is good, it is long  ,Rory appears to me more chatty than usual, he plays a bit of Irish music, he plays some Spanish music , he even talks in Gaelic.

From his first words of "Lets go to work "  to 'Shadowplay there is a vibrance to this gig , he is really enjoying himself.

The concert is also for me tinged with sadness . All my other bootlegs are late 70's or early 80's , this is my first in the 90's and somehow listening to it I cant help thinking of what was soon to come .

But what a good concert .

I do like this boot.

These reviews will be commenting more on the quality of the recording  rarther than the quality of Rorys playing..

I have chosen to review this particular gig first for a few reasons which I shall mention later but first about the concert.

Rory starts off with the crowd pleaser 'Messin with the kid' and quickly moves on to an excellent version of 'Tattood Lady'  . The next track 'Garbage Man' brings a more bluesy feeling to the concert and contains one of my favourite lines " she better come back, back to empty my garbage can" (This track is available for download below)

The full track listing can be found here

Unfortunately being an audience recording the quality is quite often poor with the talking louder than the music but there is still enough to satisfy the true Rory fan.

I would give this recording a 5.5-6 out of 10 but it still is one every Rory fan should have in their collection.

This concert has special meaning for me because I met and talked with Rory plus he gave me a signed bottle of Guinness which In a drunken stupour I dropped and smashed on the way home. It is one of my biggest regrets , I still imagine it placed proudly in my room.

In is also the only concert I still have pictures for and you can see some of them on these pages.

This is my first review and the format will probably change as I carry on . It would also be fantastic if fans would send in reviews of this or any other concert so that I can put them up on the site.

Cheers

Maurice
