Bruce Turlish comments: I have a casual interest in Lovecraft's fiction, but I don't think he was a great writer; actually, I think the British writer William Hope Hodgson wrote "cosmic" horror fiction with more skill than Lovecraft. To anyone aspiring to write Cthulhu Mythos fiction of any quality, I would suggest the following:
1. Base your story on an original theme that hopefully has never been
done before.
2. Avoid the usage of the banal and predictable terminology and imagery of
so much second-rate Mythos fiction--in other words, don't beat the reader
over the head with names like Jog--Yakka, Choka-Vectria or other such rot.
Also, shambling tentacled monstrosities should be avoided, unless
presented in a new or atypical way.
3. Make every effort to make sure your fiction is clearly and correctly
written in terms of grammar and spelling.
I would be interested in any comments anyone cares to make on my own two fictional efforts so far, one of which, "The Final Pronunciation," can be found here at this site. My other story,"The Ultimate Evil," can be found at the url below.
