Powers and Abilities:

Zatanna has the ability to manipulate magic in many ways and forms. Born with the genetic structure of the Homo Magi, she supplements this with the many spells she has studied over the years. Like Zatara before her, Zatanna casts her spells by speaking them backwards. She does this, in part, to concentrate on the spells she is casting. For different times in her career, her powers have waned or become selective, only to come back to full strength again. Zatanna is considered one of the most powerful magicians on Earth, and her only weakness is her need to speak her spells. From Zatanna's time with the Justice League, she has learned limited hand-to-hand combat skills. She tends to rely on her powers instead of any physical conflict.
Weaknesses/Limitations: Zatanna must prepare each spell that she is likely to use in combat, which can have it's limitations.

Background:

Zatanna is the daughter of John Zatara, the Golden Age magician, and Sindella, a member of the race of humans with innate magical abilities called the Homo Magi. In fact, Zatanna inherited the genetic abilities of her mother.

Sindella seemingly died after giving birth to Zatanna, but actually decided to return to her people hidden in a city in northern Turkey. While Zatanna was still a child, the evil elemental Allura placed a curse on Zatara that ensured both his death and his daughter's should he ever see her again. To save Zatanna, Zatara left Earth-1 on a quest across the various dimensions to find a good counterpart of Allura that would counter the spell.

Zatanna became a stage magician like her father, wearing a copy of her father's outfit. Soon, she became a super-heroine and decided to begin a quest for her father. Asking the aid of various super-heroes, Zatanna eventually traveled to the other-dimensional world of Kharma, where a good Allura forced the evil one to release the curse put upon Zatara. After 20 years, Zatanna met her long-lost father Zatara.

Meanwhile, in the city of the Homo Magi, the Hidden Ones started to tap Sindella's "medulla jewel," a part of her brain which emanated a special type of energy. Zatanna also possessed a "medulla jewel," and Sindella feared the Hidden Ones would soon start feeding off her. Sindella established a psychic link with her daughter, which also resulted in trans- forming Zatanna's costume into a replicate of Sindella's. Shortly thereafter, Zatanna joined the original Justice League of America. She and her father were finally reunited with Sindella in the Homo Magi's hidden city. However, Sindella sacrificed her life against the Hidden Ones.

After her mother's death, Zatanna decided a clean break was needed, and for the first time, she wore a costume of her own devising that resembled neither her father's nor her mother's. It was during this time that she began a romance with fellow Justice Leaguer the Flash II, which ended in friendship shortly thereafter.

Due to overuse of her powers, especially after giving Justice League villain the Key his body back, Zatanna's powers failed her. At the end of the battle with the Key and Amazo, Zatanna found that her magical powers now only affected the 4 elementals: fire, water, air, and earth. Though her powers were curtailed, she still proved herself against such Justice League villains as the Lord of Time, Per Degaton, and the demon Hellrazer that possessed her body for a time.

When the original League was disbanded, Zatanna stayed with the new league reformed by Aquaman. Zatanna moved with the League to Detroit, where she initiated a romance with Dale Gunn, the Justice League's mechanic. When the Justice League moved into their Secret Sanctuary, Zatanna left to restart her stage career, occasionally going solo, such as when she teamed up with the Hawks against the Kite-Man and battled a vengeful Allura.

At this time, she went on a quest to find her missing roommate Sheri Stanley. Zatanna eventually found Sheri under the influence of the cultist Adam, who captured Zatanna. Adam deciphered her genetic structure and infused the Homo Magi genetic pattern onto himself. However, Adam could not cope with the expanding consciousness, and found himself unable to comprehend the godhead. With the help of Zatanna and her teammates Gypsy and Martian Manhunter, Zatanna entered into the godhead herself. As a result, Adam and Zatanna realized that they had a destiny together, and left together to consider how to pursue it.

Notes:

  • Zatanna has the ability to manipulate magic in many ways and forms. Her unique genetic structure allows her to use the magic she was born with as well as learned magic.

  • Zatanna's time with the JLA afforded her limited combat training, but she shuns it in favor of using magic.
