The Black Canary wasn't the first so-called Bird
of Prey employed by Oracle. That distinction is held by the adventuress known as
Power Girl, who dissolved her partnership-in-crimefighting with Barbara Gordon
after an unavoidably disastrous mission.
Choosing the Canary as Power Girl's successor was a logical choice for
Oracle. In her teens, Barbara thrilled to the exploits of Gotham City's
newest homegrown heroine, who wore the familiar fishnets-and-leather costume
of her mother, a member of the legendary Justice Society of America.
And Dinah Lance was her mother's namesake in more ways than
one. Like the original Black Canary, Dinah is an expert at judo as well as
being schooled in other fighting skills by her heroic "uncles" in the JSA.
The younger Dinah, however, was unique in possessing her own metagene-activated
superpower: a hypersonic "Canary Cry" capable of staggering opponents and
rending steel. Dinah briefly lost this
ability following injuries sustained in a horrible personal attack, but
found her vocal cords miraculously healed after Oracle submerged her in one
of eco-terrorist Ra's al Ghul's rejuvenating "Lazarus Pits" in order to save
Dinah's life. Today, Dinah is one of
the hardest-working costumed heroines on the planet. As the modern Black
Canary, she co-founded the Justice League of America, and currently serves
as a reserve member of the reconstituted Justice Society, though that role
remains secondary to her position as Oracle's primary undercover field
operative. At first more strangers than
partners, Dinah and Barbara Gordon are now fast friends, a relationship that
continues to grow as these Birds of Prey work to make the world a better,
safer place. Notes:
