Powers and Abilities:

The son of a human father and an Atlantean, Aquaman has the ability to exist indefinitely in the depths of Earth's oceans, which is the source of his great strength. Aquaman is able to swim up to 100 m.p.h., withstand great extremes of temperature, sonar & pressure, is super-strong, can see with a minimum of visible light, hear over great distances & can communicate telepathically with all marine life, and to some extent with humanoid lifeforms. Aquaman is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant who also has a telepathically controlled hook on his left hand that he can fire and retract at will.

Background:

Born of royal and sorcerous Atlantean blood, the infant Prince Orin was abandoned on Mercy Reef for having blond hair, which according to Atlantean myth signifies the Curse of Kordax. The child, left for dead, was rescued and raised by the dolphin Porm until finding his way into the care of Arthur Curry, a lighthouse keeper.

Coming of age, Orin - by then having taken the human name Arthur Curry in honor of his adoptive father - discovered he possessed tremendous strength and speed and the ability to communicate telepathically with all marine life.

As Aquaman, Orin helped found the Justice League of America. Discovering his royal heritage, he reclaimed his birthright as King of Atlantis, eventually taking Mera - the deposed queen of another dimension - as his bride. The tumultuous nature of that relationship, which included the death of their child, was only worsened by the events of the Imperiex War, during which Aquaman sacrificed himself and his people, trapping them thousands of years in the past.

The Atlanteans were enslaved by their sorcerous ancestors for more than fifteen years before Aquaman - aided by the JLA - returned them to the present. To effect the rescue, Aquaman was forced to re-sink ancient Atlantis. For this, he was deposed as king and once more banished from the seas.

Barely alive, the outcast King of the Seas was visited by the Lady of the Lake. She restored his health and appointed him "Waterbearer"

Notes:

  • Despite his duties as sovereign of the domed undersea city of Poseidonis and its sister Atlantean cities, as well as, governing all the oceans of the world, Aquaman has nevertheless remained a full-time member of the JLA.

  • Because of his role as oceanic monarch, Aquaman takes offenses to the sea and marine life very seriously, often meting out a very harsh justice of his own, regardless if international law. Occasionally, he requires some gentle reminders of League policy.

  • Aquaman's marine tanks in the Watchtower link directly to the League Olympic-size swimming pool in the gymnasium. Members are asked to show "restraint" while swimming.

  • Not so long ago, Aquaman disbanded the JLA and organizes a new team comprising both veteran and novice heroes. His tenure as leader is short-lived.

  • Aquaman has fathered another son named Koryak when he had a brief relationship with an Inupiat woman named Kako. He had a short-lived romance with Dolphin, whom Tempest has just recently married, and has an unspoken "liking" for Wonder Woman, whom among the JLA members, he has the most common with.

  • Aquaman's name is feared from the shallow shores of the Mediterranean to the blackest depths of the Mariana's trench where the blind fish swim and only he can walk.
