Jacob Whitney was a plantation owner during the days of slavery. His slaves created the mystical Blood Gem in order to extract revenge for their cruel treatment and trapped Whitney's sole in the Blood Gem dimension. Over the years the Gem absorbed all the negative and evil emotions from its guardians. These evils mixed with Whitney's soul to create the monster called Rott. Over time he managed to exert some control over his new home and began striking back against the current owner of the Gem, the sorcerer Bloodwynd. The Martian Manhunter happened to be passing during one of these battles. Bloodwynd was pulled into the Gem while the Gem bonded to the chest of the Manhunter forcing him to impersonate Bloodwynd for sometime before the JLA managed to free both heroes from Rott's grasp with the help of the second Atom.
