The Department of Extranormal Operations is the government agency formed after the appearance of Superman to deal with the regulation and control of metahumans. The DEO is a small organization that is run as a join project by the FBI, CIA and a number of other government bodies. Its main responsibility is monitoring and information gathering with respect to the metahuman community. DEO agents operate in much the say way as FBI agents do. The Director is actually a metahuman himself and was formally a member of Infinity Inc. as Mister Bones.

The DEO also has a shadowy side to it that most people do not suspect, it keeps a number of facilities around the country which is uses to house young metahumans taken from their parents to be "trained" in the use of their power. The existence of one of these facilities was revealed by Young Justice when they joined up with the Secret (herself a form DEO prisoner). Investigations by Agent Chase of the DEO and other people seems to have stamped out these practices as least in the short term.
