Henry King Jr. was the son of the Golden Age heroine Merry Pemberton (the Girl of 1000 Gimmicks) and the super-villain Brainwave. He was a rare mutant actually born with superpowers (unlike most possessors of the meta-gene who gain powers later in life). With a number of second generation heroes he founded Infinity Inc. and used his telepathic powers to battle evil. For a time he had a crush on fellow team member Jade. However things started to go wrong for King when his father bestowed him with all his own vast telepathic powers. While he initially seemed okay, the massive burden of those powers started to eat away at him.

Unfortunately the power corrupted him and he slipped down into insanity. He created a group of second string villains including a re-animated Major Force and a robotic Gorilla Grodd and called them the Legion of Doom. They were easily defeated by a Justice League spin-off group lead by Captain Atom. After that King was taken into protective custody and started treatment. This was secretly paid for by former Green Lantern, Alan Scott, who sought to keep King's madness away from his daughter Jade.
