Lana Lang was the childhood sweetheart of Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent. They had been an item for most of their lives and after college many expected them to marry. However both Clark and Lana held intertwined secrets. Clark possessed powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men (he was still a decade away from learning that he was from the planet Krypton) while Lana had been implanted with a control chip at birth by the alien Manhunters (like every other child in Smallville) so they could monitor the growth of the Kryptonian. With graduation their best friend Pete Ross left for university while Clark revealed to Lana his abilities (forever dashing her hopes that they could be couple) and left to explore the world and his responsibilities.

When Superman appeared in Metropolis Lana knew that it was Clark, she moved to Metropolis under the control of the Manhunters and began watching his appearances. Her presence in the background of a number of different news items led Lexcorp investigators to kidnap her in order to find her connection to Superman. She was rescued by Superman and returned to Smallville where she was helped by the Kents to restart her life shortly afterwards the Manhunters were defeated by the Green Lantern Corps and Earths heroes lifting the period controls that they placed on Lana's life.

Pete Ross had meanwhile returned to Smallville and taken up a job as a land agent. It began a role that eventually led him to stand for Congress and he invited Lana to come to Washington with him as his assistance. With Clark's blessing Pete and Lana began dating and once again returned to Smallville after the Sons of Liberty sabotaged Ross's political career. Lana recently gave birth to their first child, named Clark, who was kidnapped shortly after birth by Brainiac while Superman was rushing him to emergency surgery. After a brief rematch with Doomsday Superman managed to return the child.

Lana Lang was the daughter of Professor Lewis Lang, a noted archaeologist living in semi-retirement in Smallville. Lana was a bright and outgoing teenager who befriended her mild-mannered classmate Clark Kent. Their relationship was a strong one. At times Lana would act kindly towards Clark, but she would then turn around and berate him for his seeming cowardice. The root of Lana's confusion might lie in her conviction that Clark was secretly Superboy. Lana entertained herself for hours with schemes to prove that Clark bad indestructible hair or Superboys fingerprints. None of her ruses succeeded, but she did not tire of trying for many years. An interesting facet of Lana's past is her career as Insect Queen. An alien acquaintance gave Lana a bio- genetic ring, which bestowed upon her the ability to assume the powers and physical form of any inscet. This power, coupled with the courage and kindness which she learned from the experience of having the ring, merited a Reserve Membership in the Legion of Super-Heroes. As she grew older, Lana found this ability disquieting and has not used it in recent years.

After high school and a short stint as a reporter for WMET-TV in Metropolis, Lana took an extended trip to Europe. There she married and had a child, but the child was killed by terrorists. She then divorced her husband and returned to Metropolis. In Metropolis, WGBS hired Lana to be Clark's co-anchor. Although she said nothing about what had happened in Europe, her colleagues who knew her before the tragedy of her child's death could see that she had changed. She was vain and condescending. She even began a predatory campaign to steal Superman away from Lois. After seeing some of her actions mirrored by the possessive love of the Master Jalier and receiving a stern lecture from Superman, Lana realized what she was doing and took steps to make amends. When Vartox once appeared on Earth, hbe and Lana fell in love. lt is a hopeless romance, but Lana has promised to wait for him.

Now she is best friend of Clark Kent, the first he decided to share his secrets. John Byrne's Lana has same role Peter Ross had in pre-Crisis. She grew up, raised by her auntie, near Smallville, Kansas and met Clark in kindergarden. They quickly became close friends, and she fell in love with him. But her plans of marriage ended in high school one night, when he revealed his remarkable super powers and that he would be leaving Smallville. After Man of Steel's debut, Lex Luthor kidnapped her and she was interrogated in an attempt to reveal Superman's secrets, but Lana never cracked, proving how much Clark can trust her. Lana's connection with Superman has also caused her to be brainwashed by Manhunter androids, and injured during a fight between Superman and Matrix, made on Lana's imaged by pocket-universe Lex Luthor and future Supergirl.

Lana always dreamed there was a chance between Clark and her. And hoped that he could marry her, but eventually gave up when Clark told her he loved Lois Lane. And she helped him, persuading Lois Lane that Clark loved her when Lois had doubts. Eventually, Lana sold her family's farm in Smallville and moved to Washington, D.C. where she has married another childhood friend of Clark, Peter Ross. When he lost his position on Senate, the they returned to Smallville. Lana was one of Lois' bridesmaids at Lois and Clark's wedding. A few years ago, Lana became pregnant, unknown to Clark, and when she was involved in a car accident, the baby was born 2 months pre-mature. She called Clark to ask him if he could help save her baby. As Superman, he was taking the infant to another hospital when Doomsday, inhabited by Brainiac's mind, attacked him. He took the child, intending to grow a more controllable Doomsday from his tiny body. Superman and the child's father rescued the infant and Brainiac's technology had made him healthy. The proud parents named him Clark Peter Ross.

Recently Lana has taken a backseat to things going on around her as Lex Luthor chose her husband, Peter Ross as his Vice Presidential running mate. Even knowing how twisted and evil Luthor is after her capture and torture years prior, her devotion to Clark Kent still holds true for she knows that she cannot reveal the trials Luthor put her through without exposing Clark's secret identity to her husband.

The Last Son of Krypton Part 2, September 1996

A free-spirited young woman from Smallville, Lana Lang was young Clark Kent's first love. They were boyfriend and girlfriend through high school, but when Clark's super powers emerged, he embarked on a self-imposed world pilgrimage to learn more about the human race. He left behind a very hurt Lana who already knew that her Clark was vastly different from all the other boys on the planet. In fact, when the first reports of Superman started coming in, Lana knew immediately that Clark and the Man of Steel were one in the same.

These days Lana is a world-renowned fashion designer who leads a jet-setting lifestyle. She has an apartment in Metropolis, but also maintains homes in Gotham, London and Rome. She seems to be the woman who has it all, but deep down she still misses Clark and the special times they shared before he became Superman. And yet Lana knows the world needs Superman, and has promised to keep his secret. Her playful and flashy exterior masks her unrequited love for Clark.
