In an alternate future Earth was devastated by an event only known as the Great Disaster. Those that survived tried to rebuild their lives, but their was a new element added to the problem. A number of animals had gained sentience due to a human experiment dating from before the Great Disaster and in the wasteland that followed they replaced human society. Into this mix came Kamandi, seemingly the sole remaining cultured human (he was raised in a hidden bunker and taught using recordings), he often had adventures helping those around him and trying to survive in the future.

Originally Kamandi was a possible future of Earth-One, with one of the Monitor's giant tuning forks being erected during the time after the Great Disaster. With the reordering of the timeline post-Crisis, the youth that would have become Kamandi was spared from the Great Disaster and instead became Tommy Tomorrow. Further out in Hypertime it is know that a world very similar to the original Kamandi's exists. On that Earth the Great Disaster was apparently caused by a Superman, and Kamandi was able to eventually find the aged Man of Steel to help him save that planet.
