Background:
Arriving in the year 1998 at the Justice League's lunar Watchtower, Justice legion A, the JLA's counterparts from the year 85,271, invite the core membership to the 853rd Century to participate in the celebrations surrounding the return of the Prime Superman, Kal-El of Krypton, from his self-imposed stay in Earth's sun. The core members of the team decide to go, except for Batman and J'onn J'onzz, The Martian Manhunter. The Future Batman sneak attacks Batman and traps his "essence" within a device to transport him to inhabit a cloned body in the future. A new group of Titans, led by Arsenal, fail to stop Vandal Savage from stealing several nuclear powered Rocket Red suits, which he uses to hold the defeated Titans within. Moments after the core of the JLA, except The Martian Manhunter, departed for the future, Hourman collapsed from a virus that had been secretly planted upon him in the future that was causing all computers and humans to break down over a period of 24 hours.

In the 853rd Century, The Justice League were to participate in displays of their powers and abilities, but the immortal Cro-Magnon Vandal Savage and the sentient solar computer Solaris caused the JLA'ers to be thought of as evil clones. Aquaman must save Neptune from a huge alien marine creature which had been teleported their to wreak havoc. Batman must prevent the escape of the criminally insane criminals from the Pluto asylum, with the help of the Future Robin and Future Catwoman. The Flash must outrace criminals on Mercury and aid an aged Captain Marvel, who has just awakened from hibernation, in preventing the rotation of Mercury from stopping. Green Lantern saves the Solaris space station from destruction, but barely escapes from the solar computer's attack. On Earth, Superman escapes from a mob of super-powered hunters to find his Fortress of Solitude, which resides within a tesseract and is guarded by The Resurrection Man, a friend from the 20th Century and strategist of Justice Legion A. Wonder Woman must prevent Venus from becoming a place of cold, heartless warfare, as The Amazons have become uncaring about the consequences of their battles. The JLA escape and rendezvous in Justice Legion A's roundtable headquarters on Jupiter to plan their defense against Solaris.

The Martian Manhunter has survived to this time as well, defending humanity throughout space and finally becoming bonded with the planet Mars. Savage manages to kill The Resurrection Man for the final time while obtaining The Knight Fragment, which appears to be the last remaining piece of Kryptonite in the galaxy. Savage plans to use the Kryptonite to kill the Prime Superman as he emerges from the sun, as well as the 20th Century Superman, wiping out the Superman Dynasty which has opposed him throughout time. Reaching Mars, Green Lantern encounters J'onn, who informs the other members of The JLA of Savage and Solaris' plans.

In 1998, the virus has caused a nuclear weapon contained in a Rocket Red suit, launched by Vandal Savage which strikes Montevideo, Chile instead of his intended target, killing over 1 million people. Justice Legion A is thought to have caused the virus that is killing mankind and are hunted by heroes such as Firestorm and The Ray II before The Martian Manhunter stops them and they are finally able to prove in the Watchtower that they are innocent. The Future Superman prevents a second Rocket Red suit, containing Arsenal, from destroying Metropolis, while the Future Wonder Woman saves Supergirl from exploding in another Rocket Red suit in Europe & the Future Flash and Impulse free Jesse Quick from her Rocket Red suit before defusing the nuclear device. The Titans later manage to defeat Savage, with The Martian Manhunt's help, causing the loss of his left eye, which he evidently refused to replace through time to the 853rd Century.

Using equipment left behind by Epoch, they combine with the rest of the JLA to build a machine capable of piercing deep time. Using The Future Starman's Qarvat as a power source, The Future Superman is able to punch his way through the time barrier in time to aid The JLA core members in their battle against Solaris. Having so far kept Solaris off guard, using Green Lantern's power ring, which is unknown to Solaris because their were no later Green Lantern's following the 20th Century, The JLA succeed in holding off Solaris' direct attacks on the populated worlds of the solar system and withdrawing the sample of human DNA which enabled Solaris to operate, but not before Solaris managed to fire the Knight Fragment at the spot where the Prime Superman will emerge.

Unable to catch up to the speeding fragment, The JLA learn that this was all setup by The Resurrection Man and The Martian Manhunter over the centuries as a plan to finally defeat Savage and Solaris. The Knight Fragment turns out to be the lost power ring of Green Lantern. The Prime Superman returns to Solaris, using the sample of 20th Century human DNA, actually drawn from Lois Lane, and uses it to restore Lois to life within the body of Platinum. The Prime Superman soon uses the vast power gained from his time within the sun to recreate Krypton within the Sol system, complete to the last individual before returning the last remaining Justice Leaguer, Green Lantern, to the 20th Century, but not before J'onn provides Green Lantern with a message to carry back to himself in the 20th Century, ensuring their victory in the future. Hourman decides to remain in the 20th Century as a member of the JLA, replacing The Martian Manhunter, who becomes a Reserve Member to better protect the Southern Hemisphere. Hourman then arranges for the Future Vandal Savage to be transported through time to the impact site of the Rocket Red suit which destroyed Montevideo, ending any further threats from him.
