Background:
James Gordon had the toughest job in Gotham City. As Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department, Gordon has led the charge to rid Gotham of crime, as well as working from within his own department to ferret out corruption plaguing the G.C.P.D. since he transferred to Gotham from the Chicago police force. To that end, he stood by Gotham at her worst--riot and robbery, arson and plague--often at a heavy cost to his own marriages, his family's safety and his own health.

Gordon has even gone so far as to run in Gotham's mayoral election when incumbent Mayor Armand Krol dismissed him as police commissioner and promoted Gordon's wife, Sarah Essen-Gordon, as ranking officer for a time. But through it all, James Gordon was not alone in his dreams of a brighter Gotham. Though deep down Gordon knew that vigilantism was the last step towards anarchy, he had forged an uneasy alliance with Gotham's most notable masked guardian--and the faith that, when Gotham needed that beacon of hope, the Batman and his allies would always answer his call, and together, they would keep the streets safe.

After the murder of his wife by The Joker at the culmination of No Man's Land, Gordon finally "pulled the pin," retiring from the G.C.P.D. and leaving the city that he had helped bring back from the edge of disaster.
